  • Ex-NFL linebacker Darron Lee indicted on murder charge in death of partner

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Former NFL linebacker Darron Lee has been indicted on a murder charge in the death of his partner.

A grand jury in Hamilton County returned an indictment Tuesday. Prosecutors dismissed a tampering with evidence charge to focus solely on the more serious allegation, Hamilton County District Attorney Coty Wamp said.

The state is pursuing a first-degree murder conviction, which carries a life sentence. The decision on whether to pursue the death penalty against Lee will be made in the coming weeks, Wamp said.

Lee is accused of killing Gabriella Perpetuo, 29, in February. A medical examiner listed Perpetuo’s cause of death as multiple blunt force injuries, and the autopsy report listed 12 different injuries, including multiple hematomas, bone fractures and stab wounds.

At the time of Lee’s arrest, he was on probation in Franklin County, Ohio, and Alachua County, Florida, after he was charged in three separate alleged assaults involving another man, Lee’s mother and the mother of his child, court records showed.

Prosecutors accused Lee of asking ChatGPT how to get medical help without calling the police. He asked the artificial intelligence assistant whether a fall could cause bruising to two eyes and “two stabby looking wounds,” according to evidence presented in court.

Lee remains in the Hamilton County Jail without bond.

The 31-year-old Lee played 58 games with the Jets, Kansas City and Buffalo between 2016 and 2020. The former Ohio State standout was the 20th pick in the 2016 draft by the Jets.

  • Klint Kubiak: Raiders rookie QB Fernando Mendoza has ‘gotten a ton better’

HENDERSON, Nev. — Fernando Mendoza has received in offseason practices a taste of what’s to come, however the true glare of the spotlight won’t begin to truly focus on him until late July when the Las Vegas Raiders opening training camp.

Then everything will be dissected — his passes, his play behind center, which section of the depth chart he is quarterbacking.

That comes with being the No. 1 overall draft pick, especially at that position.

“I’m really working hard with (the) coaching staff, who’s pushing me and have done a phenomenal job of relaying and communicating the information needed,” Mendoza said. “It’s up to me to take full advantage of that, and I feel like I’ve been growing every day from the first day of OTAs, then (Tuesday) in minicamp. I feel like I’m leaps and bounds ahead of where I was.”

Though the Raiders aren’t forcing Mendoza to come in and immediately be the team’s franchise QB — all indications point to veteran Kirk Cousins entering the season as the starter — that doesn’t mean coaches have held back in hitting the rookie with the playbook.

“He’s gotten a ton better, putting the work in,” coach Klint Kubiak said. “I think it is an adjustment, but with anyone coming into the league, you got to put the work into it and he’s done that. We’re going to ask him to play under center, we’re going to ask him to play in the gun, we’re going to ask him to play in the pistol. All of our quarterbacks. That’s not just us, that’s a leaguewide thing.

“But the things we’ve asked him to improve on, he’s been diligent at.”

Mendoza said he went through a similar transition after transferring from California to Indiana and experienced a rough spring practice, not looking like the player who would that season win the Heisman Trophy and stunningly lead the Hoosiers to their first national championship.

That experience, he said, has made taking in so much new — information, teammates, coaches, system — that he’s handled it better than a year ago.

“I’m growing,” Mendoza said. “This isn’t the Super Bowl today.”

He might not be the starter, yet, but Mendoza is getting that kind of treatment.

Mendoza enthusiastically cranked the horn with his Raiders teammates cheering him on at Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final between the Vegas Golden Knights and Carolina Hurricanes. A Mendoza bobblehead of him with the famous Las Vegas welcome sign also was unveiled.

The quarterbacks room of Mendoza, Cousins and Aidan O’Connell has worked together, but there’s also a competition.

Cousins made it clear he’s not in Las Vegas to serve as Mendoza’s mentor.

“I’m learning a lot from them, too, and asking questions of them,” Cousins said. “It’s always been a working force together in the quarterback room, and that’s what it is. Nobody’s leading more than someone else.

“I’ve always felt I prepare my best during the season when we can all kind of be together in that room in the evening, going over things together rather than working in our own silos. I think when we can kind of all be given feedback on each other, that’s when I think the best ideas come out.”

    Kubiak agreed with Cousins’ assessment.

“We never ask anybody to be a mentor,” Kubiak said. “If you’re on the roster, it’s to play and to play really well for the team. That’s the quarterback’s job, all three of them, is to get ready to play and win games at a high level. Then when everybody’s doing that, they’re pushing each other, it creates competition, and the whole roster gets better. All I want from our quarterbacks is to be competitive and to all prepare like they’re starters.”

Linebacker Nakobe Dean, who signed a three-year, $36 million contract with the Raiders, did not practice the two days of mandatory minicamp this week.

Kubiak wouldn’t tip his hand on if Dean is injured.

“Nakobe’s been here every day,” Kubiak said. “He didn’t practice, but all injuries and things like that, I don’t want to talk about this time of year. We just want to get all our guys healthy to training camp. That’s really the most important thing.”

Dean played four seasons with Philadelphia, making 226 tackles, 19 for loss and 7 1/2 sacks.

  • Broncos’ Jonathon Cooper arrested again on four charges, including harassment, violation of protection order

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Denver Broncos pass rusher Jonathan Cooper is in more legal trouble following his second arrest in a week.

Cooper was arrested Thursday night on multiple charges that he violated a protection order filed against him after his initial arrest stemming from a domestic dispute with his girlfriend last week.

Cooper is now facing new charges of harassment from repeated phone calls and violation of a protection order, according to court records.

The protection order was put in place for Cooper’s girlfriend after two additional charges, including a felony charge of second-degree assault by strangulation, were added Wednesday from his June 4 arrest in Parker.

Aside from his legal troubles, Cooper could face a lengthy suspension from the league.

NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy told The Associated Press on Friday, “We continue to monitor all developments in the matter which remains under review of the personal conduct policy.”

The Broncos also issued a statement to AP, saying, “We are disappointed to learn of Jonathon Cooper’s arrest on Thursday and continue to review this matter.”

Cooper is accused of sending 20 messages and making two unanswered phone calls to his girlfriend Thursday before going to her apartment and knocking on her door, according to the arrest affidavit. He left when she called 911. Cooper told officers who went to his residence later Thursday that he had not been served with a protection order.

Cooper was ordered during an appearance in the 23rd Judicial District Court in Douglas County on Friday to abide by a stricter protection order that prohibits any contact with his girlfriend. Also, he must have court approval to travel out of state. He was released on a personal recognizance bond.

Cooper originally faced misdemeanor domestic violence charges and pleaded not guilty Monday in a Douglas County courtroom. Additional charges were announced in court Wednesday, including felony assault by strangulation and third-degree assault of knowingly or recklessly causing bodily injury.

The new charges stemmed from a forensic nurse’s examination of Cooper’s girlfriend at a hospital during which the nurse wrote that the woman experienced an injury from being choked that led to a “substantial risk of death” or substantial risk of injury, including the possibility of a traumatic brain injury, according to court records.

Cooper, 28, was originally arrested June 4 by Parker police along with his girlfriend, and both were booked into jail early that next morning. Cooper was held on suspicion of criminal mischief with a domestic violence enhancer. His girlfriend was arrested on suspicion of misdemeanor domestic violence and petty criminal mischief.

The arrests followed an argument and physical confrontation between Cooper and his girlfriend over cell phones that were damaged in the scuffle after she accused him of infidelity, according to a police affidavit.

Last weekend, Cooper posted a Bible verse about anger on his Instagram account and wrote, “I apologize to my family and my friends and my community. … And so many others.” He added, “I realize positing a bible (verse) after something very serious happens does not just mean everything is okay.” In another post, Cooper wrote, “I apologize. This situation is not who I am.”

A seventh-round draft pick out of Ohio State in 2021, Cooper is entering his sixth season with the Broncos. He’s had at least eight sacks in each of the last three seasons, including a career-best 10.5 sacks in 2024 when he signed a four-year contract extension worth up to $60 million.

Cooper has a motions hearings set for July 6 on his original arrest and July 14 on his latest arrest, in addition to a trial set to begin July 22, just before the Broncos report to training camp.

Cooper has been participating in the Broncos’ offseason training program and on Thursday coach Sean Payton said he had a talk with Cooper about his arrest. “We’ll follow the league’s guidelines, and I’m sure a lot of that will be led by the local authorities’ guidelines. We’ll pay attention to all of it,” Payton said.

The Broncos hold their mandatory minicamp next week before their summer break.

  • NFL Network: Free-agent WR Stefon Diggs won’t receive discipline from NFL over assault case

The NFL will not hand down a punishment to free-agent wide receiver Stefon Diggs, who was found not guilty of assault charges in May.

The league notified Diggs on Friday that it concluded its investigation and there is insufficient evidence to support a finding of a personal conduct policy violation, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported.

The four-time Pro Bower had been charged with felony strangulation and misdemeanor assault and battery stemming from an alleged dispute with his former personal chef. Diggs was found not guilty on May 5.

Despite the acquittal, the NFL could have penalized the wideout if they had found that he had violated the personal conduct policy. Friday’s news closes the book on that possibility.

Diggs spent the 2025 season with the New England Patriots, generating 85 catches, 1,013 yards and four touchdowns, helping the Pats reach the Super Bowl. New England released the wideout earlier this offseason. Given the additions of A.J. Brown and Romeo Doubs this offseason, a crowded WR room has little need to bring back a veteran like Diggs.

With a league penalty no longer in play, Diggs could find a new home during the league’s summer break or perhaps during training camp.

  • Seven players who deserve to make their debut in the NFL Top 100 of 2026

Former NFL player and scout Bucky Brooks knows the ins and outs of this league, providing keen insight in his notebook. In today’s installment, Brooks highlights seven players who deserve their first taste of a distinguished honor that can only be bestowed upon them by their peers.

Summer is almost officially here, and with it comes one of my favorite annual traditions. A new season of NFL Top 100 — the player-voted countdown series from NFL Films and X — premieres Monday, June 22 at 10 a.m. ET exclusively on X. With that in mind, I thought this would be the perfect time to identify players who should make their debuts on the prestigious list this year. After studying the tape and revisiting my scouting reports from 2025, here are seven guys who should crack the Top 100 for the first time, along with the range in which they should be ranked.

Programming note: NFL Top 100 episodes debut weekdays on X beginning June 22 and run through Sept. 4, and will air later on NFL+. For players ranked No. 100-11, each weekday episode will feature two new player reveals through Friday, Aug. 21. The top 10 will be announced over the course of two weeks with a player revealed each day at 10 a.m. ET from Aug. 24 through Sept. 4.

    Rank 1

    Drake Maye

    New England Patriots · QB

The 2025 MVP runner-up should sit high atop the list after leading the Patriots on an unexpected Super Bowl run. Maye led the NFL in completion rate (72%), becoming the eighth quarterback in league history to finish a season with at least 4,000 yards and 30 passing touchdowns while completing 70% or more of his passes. He struggled in the postseason, but the third-year pro’s efficiency and effectiveness were reflected in his league-best 113.5 passer rating and his 13 games with a passer rating of 100 or better. Given his spectacular play as a young passer adapting to a new system, the Patriots’ QB1 is squarely in the discussion as one of the league’s top-five quarterbacks.

Projected NFL Top 100 range: Top 20.

    Rank 2

    Jaxon Smith-Njigba

    Seattle Seahawks · WR

The 2025 Offensive Player of the Year swiped the crown from Justin Jefferson and Ja’Marr Chase as the NFL’s WR1. JSN led the league in receiving yards (1,793), while seamlessly transitioning from doing most of his work in the slot to playing outside for the vast majority of his third season. The subtle position change enabled the polished route-runner to dominate one-on-one matchups on the perimeter on the way to topping 100 receptions (119) and six touchdowns (10) for the first time in his career. With the 6-foot, 197-pound pass catcher emerging as an unstoppable force as a playmaker, the Seahawks made him the highest-paid player at his position this offseason.

    Rank 3

    George Pickens

    Dallas Cowboys · WR

After being traded to the Cowboys following a topsy-turvy run in Pittsburgh, the 6-3, 200-pounder showed the football world he is a legitimate WR1. Despite sharing the marquee with CeeDee Lamb, Pickens ranked third in the league in receiving yards (1,429), averaging 15.4 yards per catch. He has become a nightmare on the perimeter for defenses as a crafty route runner, particularly on slants and other in-breaking routes at intermediate depth. As Pickens enters a contract year playing on the franchise tag, the rest of the league will pay close attention to the big-play weapon with a versatile game that makes him one of the most difficult playmakers to stop.

Projected NFL Top 100 range: Top 50.

    Rank 4

    Caleb Williams

    Chicago Bears · QB

The “Iceman” has helped the Bears emerge as a title contender with his spectacular playmaking feats inside and outside the pocket. The Madden NFL 27 cover star has not only captivated the football world with improvisational skills, but his ability to come through in the clutch has given him a superhero aura in the Windy City. With seven fourth-quarter comebacks in 2025, including the playoffs, and a catalog of highlight-reel throws in closing minutes, the third-year pro is climbing the charts as a top quarterback. He threw for nearly 4,000 yards with a 27:7 TD-INT ratio in his first season under Ben Johnson, despite his inconsistencies as a passer. If Williams continues to refine his game under Johnson’s direction, the league is on the verge of witnessing the birth of a megastar who could rival Patrick Mahomes as the ultimate late-game closer.

Projected NFL Top 100 range: Top 50.

    Rank 5

    Azeez Al-Shaair

    Houston Texans · LB

The heart and soul of the Texans’ defense, Al-Shaair is a force between the numbers. The eighth-year pro exhibits exceptional range chasing down running backs and receivers. He flashes superb instincts, awareness and diagnostic skills, as well. Although his Texans teammates Will Anderson Jr., Danielle Hunter, Derek Stingley Jr. and Jalen Pitre frequently garner the headlines for their spectacular play, Al-Shaair has transformed from undrafted free agent to underrated superstar for a squad that embraces gritty defenders who play with superior effort and a touch of violence.

Projected NFL Top 100 range: Top 75.

    Rank 6

    Carson Schwesinger

    Cleveland Browns · LB

The 2025 Defensive Rookie of the Year has quickly established himself as one of the best “see ball, get ball” defenders in the league. Schwesinger finished among the top 10 in tackles (156), while adding 2.5 sacks and a pair of interceptions. As a young defender with a feel for the game that is rare for a first-year starter, the 2025 second-round pick is poised to become the face of the franchise for a team that lives and dies by its defense. Considering his impact between the tackles, all eyes are on Schwesinger as the league’s next great middle linebacker.

Projected NFL Top 100 range: Top 75.

    Rank 7

    Devin Lloyd

    Carolina Panthers · LB

It is rare to find a linebacker with a knack for creating impact plays in the passing game, and Carolina made sure to lock one up this offseason by signing Lloyd to a three-year contract. Last season with the Jaguars, Lloyd snagged a career-high five interceptions — returning one for a 99-yard score against the Chiefs — as a “spot drop” defender in a vision-and-break scheme that feasted on tipped and overthrown passes. While Lloyd’s exceptional ball skills mask some of his coverage issues, there is always a place on the field for an instinctive playmaker who can create turnovers and splash plays at the second level. Given his skill set, Lloyd should at the very least crack this list.

Projected NFL Top 100 range: Top 100.

  • Shohei Ohtani homers, then exits hurt as Dodgers down Pirates

Shohei Ohtani homered for the second time in as many games before exiting due to left knee inflammation in the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers’ 8-6 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday.

Santiago Espinal came on as a pinch hitter in the seventh inning in place of Ohtani, who had two hits and reached base four times as Los Angeles’ designated hitter.

Also, Dodgers starting pitcher Justin Wrobleski took a comebacker off his leg and collided with Bryan Reynolds on the latter’s infield single in the fifth inning. Wrobleski left the game after that play with what the team called a right hamstring contusion.

Kyle Tucker ripped a two-run single, Miguel Rojas drove in two runs and Andy Pages and Dalton Rushing each scored on a wild pitch for the Dodgers.

Los Angeles reliever Jack Dreyer (3-1) struck out two batters in one scoreless inning. The Dodgers won twice in the three-game series.

Pittsburgh rookie Rafael Flores Jr. hit his first career homer and joined Jake Mangum with an RBI double apiece in the eighth inning, trimming Los Angeles’ lead to 8-6.

Tanner Scott induced Brandon Lowe to fly out to end the eighth inning, then struck out the side in the ninth to secure his seventh save.

Lowe earlier had a two-run shot, his team-leading 16th homer, as the Pirates lost for the fifth time in six games.

Ohtani opened the scoring in the third inning, depositing a 3-2 sweeper from Mitch Keller (5-4) over the wall in right-center field. The homer was the 13th of the season for Ohtani, who launched a two-run shot in the Dodgers’ 9-8 loss to the Pirates on Wednesday.

Later in the third, Tucker’s bloop single to left field plated a pair. Los Angeles tacked on two more runs in the fourth, courtesy of Freddie Freeman’s RBI single and Pages scoring on a wild pitch.

Keller permitted five runs on seven hits in four innings. He has yielded 18 runs on 24 hits in 12 2/3 innings over his past three games.

Flores sent a 1-1 slider from Wrobleski over the center field wall in the fifth. Lowe stepped up three batters later and crushed a 2-2 slider over the fence in right field to trim Los Angeles’ advantage to 5-3.

The Pirates pulled closer on Spencer Horwitz’s RBI single later in the fifth.

The Dodgers added a pair of runs in the seventh. Alex Call raced home on contact on a fielder’s-choice grounder, and Rushing scored on a wild pitch.

  • Marlins carry shutout streak, win streak into series at Pittsburgh

The Miami Marlins will look to continue a pair of impressive streaks on Friday night when they open a three-game series against the host Pittsburgh Pirates.

The Marlins have back-to-back shutouts while extending their winning streak to a season-high five games

Miami followed an 8-0 home victory over Arizona on Wednesday with a 2-0 triumph against the Diamondbacks on Thursday afternoon. Tyler Phillips yielded two hits and two walks while striking out five batters over five-plus scoreless innings for the Marlins in the series finale.

“We’ve made a goal to win four games a week, and I think a lot of us have taken that really personally and really like a lot to heart,” Phillips said. “The pitching staff coming in and just attacking, man. Early in the year, we didn’t do it, and I think now we’re really taking that to heart.”

Otto Lopez, who leads the majors with a .344 batting average, recorded his major-league-best 29th multi-hit performance of the season on Thursday. He had two of the five hits for the Marlins, who have won eight of nine contests on the heels of a season-worst five-game losing streak.

“We’re playing a much cleaner brand (of ball), pitching at a much higher level, and I think we’ll continue to get better,” Miami manager Clayton McCullough said. “We cut down the walks as a group, and I think we’ll see more and more days and stretches like this because of the talent we have.

“This is certainly the best stretch we’ve played consecutively this season, and (it) comes at a good time. Hopefully, we can just continue to play well and give ourselves some cracks in games.”

The Marlins will turn to Sandy Alcantara (5-4, 4.33 ERA) to start the Friday game. The Pirates will go with fellow right-hander Braxton Ashcraft (5-3, 3.28).

Alcantara pocketed a pair of wins after working seven innings in each of his last two starts. The 2022 National League Cy Young Award winner allowed one run on five hits and a walk while striking out seven in a 4-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday.

Alcantara, 30, is 2-0 with a 2.62 ERA in eight career appearances (seven starts) vs. Pittsburgh.

Ashcraft won four consecutive decisions before matching a career high for runs allowed (six) in five innings during a 6-3 setback to the Atlanta Braves on Saturday. He acknowledged he was struggling to command his off-speed pitches.

“It’s sort of a cat-and-mouse game, being able to keep guys off-balance,” Ashcraft said. “It starts with being able to offer four or five of your pitches in the zone whenever you need to. I didn’t land my curveball very often, and the slider wasn’t competitive. I was just kind of pitching with fastballs (vs. the Braves), and you can’t do that against a (team) that really hits fastballs well.”

Ashcraft, 26, didn’t fare well in his lone career outing against the Marlins, allowing one run on one hit in one-third of an inning of a no-decision on June 11, 2025.

Brandon Lowe belted his team-leading 16th homer, and rookie Rafael Flores Jr. added the first of his career in Pittsburgh’s 8-6 setback to the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday. The defeat was the Pirates’ fifth in their past six games.

  • ‘Right hand of God’: Knicks’ Karl-Anthony Towns believes divine intervention played a hand in historic NBA Finals comeback against Spurs

New York Knicks center Karl-Anthony Towns believes divine intervention played a role in the team’s historic comeback in Game 4 of the 2026 NBA Finals against the San Antonio Spurs.

The Knicks trailed by as many as 29 points in Wednesday’s contest but clawed their way back to a 107-106 win to take a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven series. New York forward OG Anunoby completed the largest comeback in NBA Finals history with a tip-in after guard Jalen Brunson missed a three-pointer with 1.2 seconds remaining.

    Karl-Anthony Towns reacts to OG Anunoby’s game-winner

“Right hand from God,” Towns said of Anunoby’s shot, per Howard Beck of The Ringer. “Right hand of God.”

We doubt Anunoby’s hands possess any sacred powers, but they did plenty of great work for the Knicks in Game 4. He scored a playoff-high 33 points on 10-of-15 shooting from the field, grabbed four rebounds, logged one assist and blocked one key shot.

Before his tip-in that saved the Knicks, Anunoby chased down Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox, rejecting a layup that would’ve given San Antonio a 108-105 lead and potentially sealed the game. The shot was still much more memorable and will be one of the series’ defining moments.

“That has to be the most iconic shot in the history of New York basketball,” Knicks head coach Mike Brown said, per Stephen Whyno and Tim Reynolds of the Associated Press. “I’m not you guys. You guys know better than me. But it was just unbelievable.”

Anunoby’s layup probably will be ranked the No. 1 shot in Knicks history if they win the series, ending a 53-year championship drought. New York will do so if it beats the Spurs in Game 5 in San Antonio on Saturday (ABC, 8:30 p.m. ET). If New York wins the title, more Knicks fans could join Towns in insisting Anunoby’s tip-in was the act of a supreme being.

  • Drake Maye injury scare forces Patriots to make minicamp decision

The New England Patriots entered the offseason with the heartbreak of a tough Super Bowl loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

However, hopes are high with the arrivals of A.J. Brown and Romeo Doubs to help Drake Maye get back to the biggest game of the season.

That’s why, with a little over three months left to kick-offs, the Patriots can’t take unnecessary risks with their star quarterback. Considering that, head coach Mike Vrabel decided to cut practice short on the third day of mandatory minicamp, as Maye got a bit too roughed up.

Patriots cut practice short after Drake Maye injury scare

The important part is that Maye is out of harm’s way, and he’ll have a bit over a month to get back to full strength after OTAs and minicamp. There’s absolutely no reason to risk further injury with the franchise quarterback, or any other player for that matter.

The Patriots will face a first-place schedule after dealing with a somewhat easier road to the playoffs last season, and they’ll be under a ton of pressure to prove that last year’s success wasn’t a fluke. And after finishing second in MVP voting, Maye should be extremely motivated to take his game to the next level in Year 3.
