  • Sources: Hornets seriously engaged in LaMelo Ball trade talks

The Charlotte Hornets are seriously engaged in trade talks with multiple teams that are aggressively pursuing star point guard LaMelo Ball, sources told ESPN’s Shams Charania.

Talks surrounding Ball have picked up steam with the Hornets fielding aggressive offers, sources said. If Charlotte’s terms are met, a potential trade could develop in the next 24 to 48 hours, sources said Wednesday night.

Ball has been happy in Charlotte, and both parties are in a good place after the Hornets enjoyed a massive turnaround last season and fell one play-in win short of making the playoffs and ending a postseason drought that dates to 2016.

Ball has three years left on his contract and is eligible to sign a two-year, $119.2 million extension July 6.

Ball averaged 20.1 points, 7.1 assists and 4.8 rebounds and shot 36.8% from 3 in 72 regular-season games, his most played since he logged 75 in his second season in 2021-22. From 2022-23 to 2024-25, Ball played in a total of 105 games because of injuries.

With Ball leading an exciting offense, the Hornets won 44 games after winning just 19 the season before. The Hornets took a massive leap in part because of the improved health of Ball and Brandon Miller and the arrival of rookie Kon Knueppel.

Miller, the second pick in 2023, averaged a team-high 20.2 points and 4.9 rebounds in 65 games while Knueppel finished second in Rookie of the Year voting to Dallas’ Cooper Flagg after becoming the first rookie to lead the league in 3-pointers made.

Ball helped the Hornets beat the Miami Heat 127-126 in overtime in the first Eastern Conference play-in game when he made a layup with 4.7 seconds left.

Ball, however, was fined $35,000 “for making unnecessary and reckless contact” with Bam Adebayo after Ball swiped at the Heat center’s foot while on the ground, sending Adebayo to the floor and injuring his lower back. Ball also was fined $25,000 for using profane language during a TV interview after the win and later apologized to Adebayo.

The Hornets were crushed by the Magic 121-90 in Orlando in the following play-in game to end their season.

Ball said he enjoyed the team chemistry during the Hornets’ run. He told ESPN in late March that making the postseason would be a step in the right direction but that he had much bigger goals for his time in Charlotte.

“It’s definitely what you want,” Ball said of making the playoffs. “But it’s not what I’m satisfied with. You know what I’m saying? We try to win some championships for sure.”

  • Sources: Pistons trading Isaiah Stewart to Grizzlies

The Detroit Pistons are trading backup big man Isaiah Stewart to the Memphis Grizzlies for three future second-round picks, sources told ESPN’s Shams Charania on Wednesday.

Stewart, 25, finished seventh in Sixth Man of the Year voting this past season after averaging 10 points on 55% shooting, five rebounds and 1.6 blocks off the bench for a Pistons team that topped 60 wins for the first time in 20 years.

Stewart has two years and $30 million remaining on his contract, with a team option for 2027-28.

He will join a Grizzlies team featuring a young frontcourt core of No. 3 pick Cameron Boozer, No. 21 pick Karim Lopez (who was also acquired from the Pistons via trade Tuesday) and 7-foot-3 center Zach Edey, who was limited to just 11 games last season because of multiple ankle procedures.

Despite being the East’s No. 1 seed, Detroit lost in the second round to the No. 4-seeded Cleveland Cavaliers last month. Moving Stewart will give Pistons president of basketball operations Trajan Langdon greater flexibility in filling out the rest of the roster this summer, with several key contributors from last season’s team — Jalen Duren, Tobias Harris and Kevin Huerter at the top of that list — approaching free agency.

Langdon was already active Tuesday, trading up from No. 21 to No. 17 to draft guard Ebuka Okorie out of Stanford by sending three second-round picks to the Grizzlies (who had acquired the pick from the Oklahoma City Thunder).

The Stewart deal will send three second-round picks back to Detroit from Memphis.

  • Betts hits his 300th homer in support of Ohtani as the Dodgers finish a sweep of the Twins

MINNEAPOLIS — — Mookie Betts backed Shohei Ohtani with his 300th career home run, three hits and slick defense as the Los Angeles Dodgers finished a three-game sweep of the Minnesota Twins with a 4-3 victory on Wednesday night.

Ohtani helped himself with an RBI single to spark a three-run third inning against Twins starter Joe Ryan after the two-way superstar fell behind with a three-run second.

Max Muncy and Alex Call drove in the tying and go-ahead runs off Ryan for the MLB-leading Dodgers, and Tanner Scott pitched the ninth inning for his 11th save.

Betts, who won six Gold Glove awards as a right fielder before becoming the regular shortstop, snagged a grounder up the middle and fired an off-balance, on-target throw to first base to retire Ryan Kreidler and end the fourth with runners at second and third. Betts later made a sliding stop of a ground ball by Royce Lewis to get the last out of the sixth inning.

With the sensational Ohtani (8-2) on the mound and the Twins countering with their ace Ryan (5-4), Target Field was filled for an announced crowd of 39,853 and the first sellout of the season.

Ohtani finished six innings with five hits and three walks allowed and eight strikeouts. Though this was his third straight start giving up with three or more runs, after yielding two or fewer in each of his first 10 turns, Ohtani dug in after the 3-1 deficit. He struck out the side in the third and retired his last seven batters.

  • Brewers beat the Reds 6-5 to complete a 3-game sweep

CINCINNATI — — William Contreras and Jake Bauers hit back-to-back homers in the third inning and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Cincinnati Reds 6-5 on Wednesday night to complete a three-game sweep.

Milwaukee improved to a season-high 20 games over .500 at 49-29. The Brewers have won 18 of the last 21 series against the Reds.

Cincinnati (37-42) was swept at home for the first time since Aug. 16-18, 2024 against the Royals, a streak of 44 consecutive series.

The Reds loaded the bases with one out in the ninth against Joel Kuhnel, who got Dane Myers to ground into an ending 6-4-3 double play.

It was Kuhnel’s third save of the season. Chad Patrick (5-3) got the win.

Brewers left-hander Shane Drohan pitched 4 1/3 scoreless innings with three walks and five strikeouts on a career-high 98 pitches.

Contreras’ two-run home run off Rhett Lowder — a line drive that eluded the glove of leaping Dane Myers in center — put the Brewers ahead 2-0.

Bauers followed with his team-leading 14th homer. It was the first time this season the Brewers hit back-to-back homers.

Lowder (3-5) allowed three earned runs on eight hits with a walk and six strikeouts on a season-high 100 pitches.

Blake Dunn’s RBI double in the sixth cut the Brewers’ lead to 3-1. With runners on second and third, Garrett Mitchell made a diving catch on Elly De La Cruz’s sinking liner in center to end the inning.

Milwaukee extended its lead to 6-1 in the seventh on pinch-hitter Andrew Vaughn’s bases-loaded double off Sam Moll which drove in three runs.

Eugenio Suárez had an RBI double in the seventh and Spencer Steer hit a two-run home run, his 13th, in the eighth off Craig Yoho to make it -5.

  • Groover, Marte hit back-to-back HRs to help Diamondbacks beat Cardinals 9-4

ST. LOUIS — — LuJames Groover and Ketel Marte hit back-to-back home runs to cap a six-run fourth inning that powered the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 9-4 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday night.

Tommy Troy went 2 for 5 with two RBI on a night during which every Diamondbacks hitter had at least one hit.

Mitch Bratt allowed one run and two hits and two walks in three innings as he became the first Canadian pitcher to make his major league debut with the Diamondbacks. Ryan Thompson (3-1) allowed one run on two hits in two innings in relief of Bratt.

José Fermín homered in the ninth inning for St. Louis and rookie Blaze Jordan went 2 for 3 with three RBI for his third multi-RBI game in 12 games since making his major league debut on June 12.

Cardinals starter Matthew Liberatore (3-5) allowed six runs and eight hits with two walks in 5 1/3 innings. He’s 0-2 with a 10.34 ERA in four June starts.

Groover hit a two-run homer to left field for his first career home run. Marte followed with his 13th homer of the season to give the Diamondbacks a 3-0 lead.

Ildemaro Vargas hit a two-out, two-run double to left field before the homers as the Diamondbacks batted around in the fourth inning and scored five of their six runs with two outs.

Hitting coach Joe Mather served as the acting bench coach for Arizona with Jeff Bannister away from the team for personal reasons.

  • France homers, Sears wins season debut as Padres beat Braves 5-2 for 3-game sweep

SAN DIEGO — — Ty France homered and JP Sears won his season debut for the San Diego Padres, who beat the NL East-leading Atlanta Braves 5-2 on Wednesday night for a three-game sweep.

The Padres have won five of seven heading into a home weekend series against the NL-West leading Los Angeles Dodgers. The Padres lost two of three when the Dodgers visited in mid-May. The Dodgers lead the Padres by nine games.

France homered to left off Martín Pérez leading off the third, his ninth. He hit a sacrifice fly in the fourth and doubled leading off the sixth, scoring on Samad Taylor’s two-run single.

Pérez (6-4), who pitched for the Padres part of 2024, saw his streak of four straight wins ends. He allowed three runs and four hits in four innings, struck out four and walked four.

Sears (1-0) was cruising with a four-hitter before allowing Joey Bart’s two-run home run with two outs in the sixth. It was his third and came with Austin Riley aboard on a walk.

Sears allowed two runs and five hits in 5 2/3 innings, struck out five and walked two. He was recalled from Triple-A El Paso on Tuesday after right-hander Lucas Giolito went on the injured list. Sears was obtained from the Athletics along with Mason Miller in one of San Diego’s five trade deadline deals on July 31.

Jason Adam pitched the ninth for his second save.

Xander Bogaerts hit an RBI single in the fifth, when the Padres stole three bases.

  • Brewers’ Uribe reaches settlement, serves 1-game suspension

CINCINNATI — Milwaukee Brewers reliever Abner Uribe served his one-game suspension Wednesday night, nearly a month after Major League Baseball handed down the penalty.

The suspension takes effect for Milwaukee’s game against the Cincinnati Reds as the Brewers completed a three-game sweep with a 6-5 win.

Uribe was suspended and fined an undisclosed amount on May 29, three days after he celebrated an inning-ending strikeout by making three WWE-style crotch chops while facing St. Louis’ dugout during a 6-0 victory over the Cardinals.

When the suspension was announced, Uribe said he planned to appeal it. He instead opted to serve the penalty Wednesday as part of a settlement agreement.

Uribe has pitched four of the past five days, so he was unlikely to be available to pitch Wednesday anyway.

Uribe is 4-2 and 3.38 ERA and five saves in 31 appearances this season. He has struck out 31 in 29 1/3 innings.

  • Cubs’ Swanson on tear vs. Mets: 11 RBI in DH, 15 for series

NEW YORK — Thanks to a historic doubleheader performance Wednesday, Dansby Swanson has the best four-game series in Chicago Cubs history — with a game to spare.

Swanson had a go-ahead RBI triple and four RBI to cap the monster doubleheader and lead the Cubs to a sweep of the reeling New York Mets with a 10-5 win.

Swanson hit a three-run homer and a grand slam in the Cubs’ 10-3 victory in the opener. The 11 RBI in a doubleheader are a franchise record, breaking the mark of 10 set by Hall of Famer Ron Santo on July 6, 1970.

The only other player in team history with a nine-RBI doubleheader is also a Hall of Famer — Billy Williams, who did it on Aug. 21, 1968.

“A dream come true, just being able to have your name next to those guys,” Swanson said. “It’s amazing and special.”

The 11 RBI are tied for the third-most in a doubleheader. Nate Colbert had 13 RBI for the San Diego Padres on Aug. 1, 1972, a mark equaled by the St. Louis Cardinals’ Mark Whiten on Sept. 7, 1993.

“Dansby had an incredible day of baseball offensively, for sure,” Cubs manager Craig Counsell said. “It’s fun to see.”

Swanson also homered Tuesday night and has three homers and 15 RBI in the first three games of the series, which is slated to conclude Thursday night.

The 15 RBI are the most ever by a Cubs player in a series of four or fewer games since 1920, when the RBI became an official statistic, and are the most by a Chicago player in a series of any length since Kiki Cuyler, another Hall of Famer, had 15 RBI in a five-game set in 1932.

The 15 RBI over the last three games are also the most ever by a shortstop, breaking the mark of 14 RBI set by Nomar Garciaparra with the Boston Red Sox from May 10-12, 1999. The only other Cubs player with at least 15 RBI in a three-game span is Sammy Sosa, who had 16 RBI from Aug. 10-12, 2002.

“I couldn’t tell you a game that I’ve had like this,” Swanson said. “It’s one that you honestly dream about.

    “Just very, very grateful.”

The three-game surge snapped a lengthy slump for Swanson, who entered Tuesday hitting .178 with three homers and 14 RBI in his last 48 games dating back to April 24. Swanson is batting just .202 with a .688 OPS this season — down considerably from his career marks of .251 and .732, respectively, entering 2026.

“You say process, process, process and stick to it, but every player is aware of how they’re producing and helping the team,” Cubs second baseman Nico Hoerner said. “He’s been so consistent and persistent. That doesn’t guarantee results, but man, does it feel good when those come through.”

Yet with 11 homers and 46 RBI through 80 games, Swanson is more than halfway to his fifth 20-homer season and almost halfway to his career-high of 96 RBI, set during his final season with the Atlanta Braves in 2022.

“That’s why the game sometimes, like, drives you crazy,” Counsell said. “Because if you probably look at Dansby’s season right now, it’s kind of a normal season for Dansby. Maybe the batting average is a little bit low, but probably all the other numbers are right around where he’s been the last couple years. It’s just been peaks and valleys for him.

“The good times, you’ve got to take advantage of them. And when you have days like that and you’re kind of the primary driver of offense, that’s going to win your team games.”

  • Cubs acquiring LHP David Peterson from Mets, sources say

The Chicago Cubs, desperate to bolster a starting rotation ravaged by injuries, agreed to acquire struggling New York Mets left-hander David Peterson in exchange for minor league infielder Cole Mathis on Wednesday night, sources told ESPN’s Jeff Passan, hours after completing a doubleheader sweep of the Mets at Citi Field.

Right-handers Edward Cabrera (hamstring) and Ben Brown (neck) became the latest Cubs starters to go on the injured list Wednesday, joining Justin Steele (elbow), Cade Horton (elbow), Jameson Taillon (hamstring) and Matthew Boyd (knee). Of the Cubs’ projected starters to open the season, only left-hander Shota Imanaga is on the active roster, though Boyd is slated to return from the IL to start Thursday’s series finale against the Mets.

In Peterson, the Cubs receive a veteran who has tumbled from All-Star to one of the worst starters in the majors since the second half of the 2025 season. Peterson, a ground ball specialist, owned a 2.83 ERA on Aug. 6 through 21 starts. Since then, he has a 6.98 ERA in 17 starts and eight relief appearances.

The Mets’ longest-tenured player, Peterson threw his final pitch for the franchise on Sunday, when he allowed five runs (four earned) over four innings in a 6-2 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies. It had been the 2017 first-round pick’s first start in nearly a month; the Mets had used an opener for Peterson in his previous four outings and were likely to use one for him again Friday against the Phillies.

His precipitous decline exacerbated the Mets’ rotation troubles. What had been considered a strength entering the season has become a calamity with a 4.97 starter ERA that ranks 28th in the majors. The problem has only intensified in June with a 6.78 ERA that ranks last, fueling the disappointing Mets’ fall to a season-high 12 games under .500 after giving up 50 runs over the past five games — all losses.

Chicago’s starters have not been much better this season with a 4.64 ERA that is 25th in the majors. But the Cubs, unlike the Mets, are in playoff contention, occupying the third NL wild-card spot, and will look to the 30-year-old Peterson to help navigate these turbulent waters after Cabrera was carted off the field Tuesday with a hamstring strain and Brown was sidelined after attempting to pitch through neck pain since June 13.

Peterson will likely slot into the rotation this weekend against the first-place Milwaukee Brewers, who have a seven-game lead on the Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals in the National League Central.

The Cubs drafted the 22-year-old Mathis in the second round of the 2024 draft. He batted .272 with 10 home runs and a .981 OPS in 39 games between the Cubs’ Low-A and High-A affiliates this season.

  • Major League Baseball implemented the ABS challenge system for the 2026 season, which allows players to challenge a ball or strike call made by the plate umpire. Each team receives two challenges to start the game, and only batters, pitchers and catchers can challenge a call. If a team wins a challenge, it can keep challenging. If a team challenges incorrectly twice, it loses its challenges for the rest of the game.

Here are the ABS challenge system rankings for batters, catchers, teams and umpires for the 2026 MLB season.

Data updated through Wednesday, June 24.
