  • Finals Film Study: Knicks take advantage of attention on Brunson in Game 2

The Knicks overcome a 12-point deficit in the first half to take a 2-0 series lead, leveraging a focus on their star guard.

SAN ANTONIO — The Finals has been the least efficient series of these playoffs, with the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs having combined to score just 103.5 points per 100 possessions through the first two games.

And because they’ve been just a little more efficient than the Spurs, the Knicks are heading back to New York with a 2-0 series lead. Game 2 on Friday (105 points on 97 possessions) was their fourth worst offensive game of the postseason, but also the Spurs’ third worst defensive game of the 11 they’ve played at home.

What’s amazing is that the Knicks are up 2-0 with Jalen Brunson having shot 19-for-56 (34%), with only nine free throw attempts in the series. Those would be both his lowest field goal percentage and his lowest free throw rate in the 15 playoff series he’s played in.

Brunson missed a couple of open looks on Friday, but he’s had the lowest shot quality among the 13 players who’ve attempted at least 10 shots in the series. He’s been the focus of the Spurs’ defense and he’s mostly had to work hard just to get tough shots.

That’s worked out well for San Antonio in regard to his inefficiency, but the focus on Brunson has created opportunities for his teammates, and they’ve stepped up and made big plays and big shots.

Here are some notes, numbers and film on how the Knicks’ got just enough offense against an elite defense (that made a few mistakes) in Game 2:

    1. Blitzing Brunson

From the opening tip, it was clear that the Spurs were going to apply more ball pressure than they did in Game 1, while also defending Brunson more aggressively on ball screens. Here’s the first 10 seconds of the Knicks’ second possession of the game, with Stephen Castle in Brunson’s shirt 90 feet from the basket and Devin Vassell blitzing a ball-screen from OG Anunoby:

That possession resulted in a stop, but the Knicks moved the ball pretty well before Mikal Bridges missed a tough floater over Victor Wembanyama.

The Spurs believe they can rotate out of those two-on-the-ball situations, and no defender can recover better than the Defensive Player of the Year. But the ball can move quicker than bodies, and the Knicks often found good shots when Brunson got rid of it quickly.

Early in the fourth quarter, Wembanyama blitzed a Karl-Anthony Towns ball-screen for Brunson and three passes later, Landry Shamet got a catch-and-shoot 3 from the left corner:

Dylan Harper almost got there, but that was a quick-release pass from Josh Hart (who caught the ball with 4.6 seconds on the shot clock) and a quick-release shot from Shamet (who let go of it with 3.5 on the clock).

    2. Double teams create more open shots

The Spurs didn’t just double Brunson on ball-screens. They sometimes sent a second defender in one-on-one situations.

Late in the second quarter, Vassell came with a double when Brunson was looking to run the clock down. Two passes later, Towns had a wide-open corner 3, because Wembanyama was concerned with another unguarded Knick (Shamet) in the paint:

Midway through the third quarter, Castle gambled with a blind double-team when Brunson was isolated against Julian Champagnie. But Brunson saw it and hit Shamet for a wide-open 3 from the left corner:

More aggressive defense can lead to more weak-side shots, and the Knicks are now 15-for-28 (54%) on corner 3-pointers in the series after averaging 4.0 makes per game through the first three rounds.

And while Brunson won Game 2 with a free throw and Wembanyama missed two mid-range jumpers in the final minute, the difference on Friday was 3-point shooting, with the Knicks outscoring the Spurs by 12 points (45-33) from beyond the arc. Both teams made six 3-pointers that weren’t wide open, but the Knicks were 9-for-19 (47%) on wide-open 3s, while the Spurs were 5-for-12.

    3. The Knicks put Wembanyama in the action

According to tracking data, Wembanyama was the screener’s defender on 22 ball-screens or handoffs for Brunson, up from 12 in Game 1.

The Spurs will sometimes try to pre-switch those actions (sending another defender up to defend the screen), so that Wembanyama can remain near the basket. But the Knicks were often able to draw him out to the perimeter. And if he’s out on the perimeter, he’s not protecting the rim or in good rebounding position.

“That’s what everybody tries to do is pull Vic away from the basket,” De’Aaron Fox said after Game 2. “We have to figure that out, because that’s not something that we haven’t seen before. But obviously [the Knicks] and the way they shoot the ball, the way they move the ball, we have to figure out a way.”

Brunson, of course, doesn’t have to use the pick that’s being set for him. He’s an opportunistic rejector of screens, and he caught both Carter Bryant and Wembanyama on the high side when he rejected a Towns screen late in the second quarter:

The Spurs gave themselves a chance to win this game by doing a better job of defending the Brunson-Wembanyama actions in the fourth. But they still came up one possession short of tying the series.

The Knicks did a great job of executing against a more aggressive defense, but the Spurs had a lot of self-inflicted wounds in Game 2. Defensive breakdowns, missed free throws and a brutal turnover in the closing seconds.

The series is not over, but they’ll need to be sharper in Game 3 on Monday (8:30 ET, ABC/ESPN).

  • Finals MVP Ladder: Karl-Anthony Towns tops list after Knicks take 2-0 lead

Jalen Brunson’s clutch play, and Victor Wembanyama’s statistical dominance has each near the top of the NBA Finals MVP Ladder.

Karl-Anthony Towns leads the Knicks in scoring with 21 points and pulls down 13 rebounds in their Game 2 win.

SAN ANTONIO — All of the hints and signs and evidence leading into the 2026 NBA Finals suggested that a center would be the difference-maker and this player would factor heavily in the fortunes of his team — and spell doom to the opposition. And through two games, this has been proven correct. Although, raise your hand if you thought this was about Karl-Anthony Towns instead of Victor Wembanyama?

Such is the case in this series. The common thread in the New York Knicks’ 2-0 lead is Towns and his terrific play at both ends. Even more, he’s doing it against Wemby, who was such a force for San Antonio in the postseason, especially in the Western Conference Finals, where he denied the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder.

Well, this is shaping up to be the crowning achievement for Towns, who arrived two years ago in a significant trade made by the Knicks to give them a, well, big edge in the East if not the entire NBA. They’re two wins away from certifying this vision because Towns has more than reassured them.

Again: Conversations can change because basketball often walks the tightrope this time of year. Should the Spurs, and more importantly Wemby, manage to produce winning basketball suddenly — and they’ve had chances to win these last two games — the scenario shifts almost overnight.

But as it stands, a big man stands tall on the Finals MVP ladder. How’s the air up there, KAT?

    The stat to know
On Friday in San Antonio, Towns became the first Knick with a 20-point double-double in a Finals road game since Dave DeBusschere in 1973. Yes, that includes Patrick Ewing. And yes, that was the last year the Knicks lifted the championship trophy.

    What they are saying
“He’s been great. He’s been phenomenal on both sides of the ball.”
    —Jalen Brunson on Towns

    1. Karl-Anthony Towns, New York Knicks

    2026 Finals stats: 19.5 points, 12.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists

His case: Once you apply the context regarding who he’s playing against, this performance by Towns is even more special. Not only is he producing offensively, but his defense has helped keep Wemby in check for the most part.

Towns has produced these shooting percentage splits: 56-43-100. That’s from the floor, the 3-point line and the charity stripe. No one else is flashing this level of efficiency. His passing from the high post has produced timely assists. And he has dropped a double-double in each of the two games.

Where would the Knicks and Towns be if that swap with Minnesota wasn’t made? Julius Randle was an All-NBA performer in his time with the Knicks but didn’t bring the shooting that the Knicks ultimately needed in this series against Wemby.

    2. Jalen Brunson, New York Knicks

    2026 Finals stats: 25.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists

His case: Let’s get right to the singular flaw first: Brunson is shooting 19-for-56 in this series. He’s had some chilly stretches, due in part to the constant double-teaming tactics being employed by the Spurs. They’re trying to make him as uncomfortable as possible. It’s surprising that, despite his misfiring, the Knicks are two games up on the Spurs.

And why is that? Well, let’s now get to the reason: Brunson has dropped the eventual game-winning points in each game. His fourth-quarter buckets stand much taller than his misses through three quarters. He’s clutch. And in The Finals, that’s all that matters. By the way, he also had six assists and five steals in Game 2.

    3. Victor Wembanyama, San Antonio Spurs

Victor Wembanyama finishes with 29 points and nine rebounds in Game 2 vs. the Knicks.

    2026 Finals stats: 27.5 points, 10.5 rebounds, 3.5 blocks

His case: Purely from a numbers standpoint, Wemby is having a solid series. And there have been stretches where his impact has been significant at both ends. This is undeniable.

Of course, there’s the issue of his errant toss to a teammate with his back turned and crucial fourth-quarter missed shots, most vividly the mid-range jumper that would’ve given the Spurs the Game 2 win. He’ll need to atone for this in New York and in a hostile atmosphere for the Spurs to have a chance of climbing back into this series.

    4. Dylan Harper, San Antonio Spurs

    2026 Finals stats: 15.5 points, 7.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists

His case: The silver lining for the team in silver and black has been the composure of a 20-year-old. Harper is fearless and it is showing on the biggest stage of the season. He was 3-for-3 from the floor in the fourth quarter of Game 2 and assisted on the Wemby basket that briefly put the Spurs ahead late in the game.

All told, Harper has dropped double-figure scoring in both games off the bench, is shooting 54.5%, and has only two turnovers in his 60 minutes of playing time. His role is growing by the game.

    5. OG Anunoby, New York Knicks

OG Anunoby rises up for the dunk after blowing by Victor Wembanyama.

    2026 Finals stats: 17.0 points, 3.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists

His case: His ability to defend multiple players, even Wemby at times, has boosted the Knicks through two games. OG’s strength and athletic ability is coming through at the most important time, not that this has been a surprise to the Knicks.

He’s also shooting 45% from deep. While his scoring has taken a slight step backward versus his regular-season numbers, the dunk over Wemby was a Game 2 highlight.
