For years, the NFL had a reputation of staking a claim to one day of the week. Sundays were for football.

In 2026, Sundays still are for football — but so are Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings.

That’s right: Six of seven nights will feature NFL football this season — this time with no COVID!

Given the breadth of days, windows and network/streaming partners, the league has spread the wealth in its prime-time slate, its most valuable commodity.

The Rams, with their league-best offense and reigning MVP Matthew Stafford, lead all NFL teams with seven prime-time games, including three in the first three weeks. The Super Bowl champion Seahawks are among five teams with six prime-time slots.

Seventeen teams — over half the league — have at least four games in a solo evening window.

Despite all that, five clubs have no prime-time representation at all: the Cardinals, Dolphins, Jets, Raiders and Titans. Combined: 19 wins in 2025. Also combined: two No. 1 overall picks at quarterback in Cam Ward and Fernando Mendoza.

The 2026 schedule isn’t set in stone; games can get flexed in and out of Thursday, Sunday and Monday night slots, and prime-time matchups are up for grabs in December and January. So, any one of those five clubs can squeeze its way into an island window.

Until then, here are the league’s best evening offerings.

JUST MISSED THE CUT: Cowboys at Giants (Week 1, Sunday); Rams at Broncos (Week 3, Sunday); Seahawks at Broncos (Week 6, Thursday); Chiefs at Seahawks (Week 7, Sunday); Chiefs at Rams (Week 13, Thursday).

Week 1: Wednesday, Sept. 9 at 8:20 p.m. ET on NBC

Same as it ever was. Don’t adjust your TV sets: New England, in white, is playing Seattle, in navy, on NBC, a rematch of the most recent Super Bowl in the first game of the season. The last time that happened, the Broncos’ “No Fly Zone” defense beat Cam Newton and the Panthers again in 2016. Will the same fate befall Drake Maye and his Patriots a decade later? After getting embarrassed by the “Dark Side” in Super Bowl LX, New England has a lot to answer for entering the 2026 season. Maye will attempt to re-write his narrative behind a rejiggered offensive line, with the additions of free agent Alijah Vera-Tucker and first-rounder Caleb Lomu, and a new receiving corps, featuring Romeo Doubs and *checks date* A.J. Brown? The Seahawks, meanwhile, lost key pieces over the offseason, including Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III and edge rusher Boye Mafe, replacing them with first-round RB Jadarian Price and journeyman Dante Fowler Jr. Seattle’s banner-raising evening is its first opportunity to prove that 2025 wasn’t just a one-off triumph, but the start of something special, even with replacement parts. Super Bowl LX wasn’t the most entertaining contest — Bad Bunny and Uchenna Nwosu excluded — but the curiosity around New England’s strange offseason and Seattle’s place in the league should drive eyeballs out of the gate.

Week 17: Thursday, Dec. 31 at 8:15 p.m. ET on Prime Video

There’s a lot that can happen between the ides of May and the first week of January — who knows if either Baltimore or Cincinnati will even be in playoff contention? But this AFC North bout intrigues, if for no other reason than the return of Trey Hendrickson to the Queen City as a member of the hated Ravens. After a number of contract squabbles, Cincy let Hendrickson test free agency in 2026, where he signed a massive deal with Baltimore after its trade for the younger Maxx Crosby fell through. The Bengals responded by signing Boye Mafe and Jonathan Allen and acquiring Dexter Lawrence. By Week 17, we’ll likely know which team’s offseason front-seven strategy prevailed. Whatever the result, Bengals fans will surely relish in letting Hendrickson, Lamar Jackson and Derrick Henry have it. They’ll also enjoy finally playing a regular-season game against the Ravens in prime time in Cincinnati — rather than Baltimore — for the first time in eight years.

Week 2: Thursday, Sept. 17 at 8:15 p.m. on Prime Video

This matchup would have hit different two years ago, when the Lions and Bills were both on the rise, coming off division titles and galvanizing their long-pained fan bases. But it’s even more interesting now, with Detroit and Buffalo having to get off the mat. The Lions broke a two-year streak in 2025 of making the postseason and winning the division, while the Bills entered the playoffs as a wild card for the first time since 2019 and got knocked out in the Divisional Round. That loss to the Broncos brought about the firing of Sean McDermott and elevation of Joe Brady. But that’s not the only change that will be on display during the first official Thursday Night Football game of the season. The Bills will open the new Highmark Stadium in this one, an open-air behemoth, built just a Labatt’s throw away from the Ralph, where Buffalo had played since 1973. The upgrade is serious, but can the Bills play to their new arena’s standards, while also carrying the magic of the old place? Detroit, similarly, hopes the spark that inspired its brief turnaround hasn’t left the building. For these two Rust Belt cities, their Week 2 meeting will be an early indicator as to whether either club has rediscovered its shine.

Week 13: Sunday, Dec. 6 at 8:20 p.m. ET on NBC

Houston did its best to end Aaron Rodgers’ career in the Wild Card Round in January. Will the Texans punish him for putting off retirement this December? Assuming the four-time MVP returns to the Steelers — the league is clearly anticipating as much, scheduling Pittsburgh for four prime-time tilts in 2026 — Rodgers will be more than halfway through his 22nd NFL season by the time Will Anderson Jr. and Danielle Hunter come tearing around his tackles in Week 13. After a thrilling Week 18 win over Baltimore last season, Rodgers was helpless against Houston’s pass rush in the playoffs, completing just over half of his passes for 146 yards, taking four sacks and committing two turnovers-turned-touchdowns. The Texans’ 30-6 win was so overwhelming that Mike Tomlin walked away from his team of nearly two decades less than 24 hours later. (I kid, kinda.) How will Rodgers’ and Mike McCarthy’s remade Steelers respond to that humiliating defeat come Week 13? A bolstered receiving corps (Michael Pittman Jr., second-round pick Germie Bernard) and offensive line (rookies Max Iheanachor, Gennings Dunker) should help matters some, but it may not be enough to rewrite Rodgers’ ending.

If for some unfortunate reason, the starting quarterbacks for this Monday night opener are Jarrett Stidham and Justin Fields, feel free to disregard its placement in the ranking. However, the fact that the NFL scheduled this AFC West clash so prominently this early in the season signals that the league expects Bo Nix and Patrick Mahomes, both of whom suffered season-ending lower body injuries (of varying degrees) in 2025, to be fully healthy by Week 1. Those are also the indications, as of publication, made by Broncos and Chiefs brass and reporters in the know. Still, there will be questions about both quarterbacks’ abilities entering the season. Mahomes, the preeminent signal-caller of his generation, is bouncing back not just from a torn ACL, the first major physical setback of his career, but Kansas City’s first playoff-less winter with him as starting QB. Will the Chiefs return to form with a fully healthy Mahomes and a recently wed Travis Kelce back in action — or is the dynasty over? The reigning AFC West champion Broncos hope it’s the latter, but after Nix fractured his ankle and missed their AFC title game loss, did they miss their golden opportunity to seize the reins of the conference? These queries won’t be answered in the season’s first 60 minutes, but the prime-time platform brings them to the fore.

Week 4: Monday, Oct. 5 at 8:15 p.m. ET on ESPN

This pick is mostly vibes-based, but what vibes! As the first of two all-NFC South prime-time matchups on the 2026 docket, the fourth MNF game of the season pits the Falcons and Saints against one another as each team is trying to prove it’s a legitimate contender in a toss-up division. In its first prime-time game since 2024 and its first Monday night matchup in the Superdome since November 2022, New Orleans surely will invoke its finest hour. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Saints’ return to the dome after Hurricane Katrina, when Steve Gleason made his tone-setting punt block against Atlanta, a play that’s immortalized in bronze outside the stadium today. The energy in the building behind Tyler Shough and Co. should be off the charts, even if the team isn’t quite in prime fighting shape at that point. New Orleans’ identity with Shough under center and Travis Etienne in the backfield is yet to be established, but the Saints are likely to be farther along than Atlanta. The Falcons boast a new head coach (Kevin Stefanski) and possibly a new quarterback in Tua Tagovailoa, who is set to battle the recovering Michael Penix Jr. in the summer. The Falcons will be under the microscope early; this will be the second of three straight prime-time games for them.

The 2025 NFC Championship Game (or 2026 Kickoff Game) that could’ve been! Chicago was a Caleb Williams interception away from clinching a date with Seattle in the conference title clash last season, and the matchup was a hotly anticipated possibility to serve as the first game of the 2026 campaign. The league office, however, opted for a familiar pairing (a Super Bowl LX rematch) for its Kickoff Game, sending Bears-Seahawks to a midseason Monday night slot. Perhaps it’s more fitting. In the final NFL game before the midterm elections, Chicago and Seattle, surprising division winners in 2025, will be ripe for evaluation. Were either of these clubs’ turnarounds built to last, or by November, will Ben Johnson and Mike Macdonald’s teams have slunk back to the pack? Another point of intrigue, perhaps more personal to the writer, is that this game will mark the first meeting between Williams and Sam Darnold, two former USC quarterbacks taken in the top three of their respective drafts. All TVs and streaming devices in the L.A. area, save for Westwood, will be tuned to ESPN for this tussle between Trojan greats — one a Heisman winner, the other the school’s first Super Bowl-winning QB.

Week 1: Thursday, Sept. 10 at 8:35 p.m. ET on Netflix

Welcome to the first prime-time game in NFL history to kick off before lunch! Even if the league’s first regular-season trip to Australia didn’t feature two perennially contending NFC West rivals, this game would’ve made the list, simply for the novelty. After exhibiting international games on football pitches, rugby fields and made-for-NFL turfs, the league will be putting on San Francisco-Los Angeles at a cricket ground. Sorry, make that a 173-year-old cricket ground. SoFi Stadium, it isn’t — but that’s the fun. Adding to the special atmosphere: Though the Australia game will be broadcast at 8:35 p.m. ET on a Thursday in the States, the game will kick off at around 11 a.m. Melbourne time … on Friday. Do they even serve Foster’s that early? There are, of course, more pressing on-field matters for the teams. Reigning MVP Matthew Stafford and the Rams were thisclose to a Super Bowl berth in 2026 and are looking for a hot start and a divisional win against Brock Purdy’s 49ers, who bowed out in the Divisional Round but split the season series with L.A. last year. San Francisco doesn’t get to benefit from playing in front of the 49ers Faithful who typically pack SoFi, but the Niners should still be competitive against Sean McVay and Co. on the other side of the globe.

Week 12: Thursday, Nov. 26 at 8:20 p.m. ET on NBC

Since the NFL first introduced the third Thanksgiving time slot 20 years ago, has it ever featured a more enticing matchup? Josh Allen vs. Patrick Mahomes, a QB clash usually reserved for Jim Nantz and Tony Romo on a dark autumnal afternoon, will be in prime time on NBC on the holiday most inextricably linked with the sport. It’s as if the NFL is saying to the nation: This is the best of us. The third game on Thanksgiving is usually the worst-performing of the three, ratings-wise, likely for reasons both matchup- and tryptophan-related. That might not be the case this time. As long as Allen and Mahomes are both healthy in Week 12, the two will square off for the seventh straight year in the regular season and the 11th time in seven seasons, including playoffs. Circumstances might change around them — Allen has a surgically repaired foot and new head coach, while Mahomes has a surgically repaired knee and new running back — but the rivalry between the Bills and Chiefs is eternal, the closest thing we have in the 2020s to Brady vs. Manning. For that, and their upcoming appearance in prime time on Turkey Night, we should be thankful.

Week 16: Friday, Dec. 25 at 8:15 p.m. ET on FOX

Can lightning strike thrice in the Emerald City? Hopefully, as long as it doesn’t hit Santa’s sleigh speeding past the Space Needle. We were blessed with two Cascadian classics between Los Angeles and Seattle at Lumen Field last season, and the schedule-makers are setting us up for a third in 2026 — though they’re making us wait all the way until Christmas for it. The two NFC West rivals’ matchups in Week 16 and the conference title game last season were momentous. First, Seattle secured pole position for the No. 1 seed with a one-point OT win in December, and then the ‘Hawks clinched an SB berth with their four-point victory in January. A dead-ball call here, a neatly caught punt there, and the Rams might well have been Super Bowl champs instead. Will this next edition prove as decisive? Who knows? But even the possibility that we’ll have a fitting conclusion to the trilogy makes this a gift fit for the holiday.

    Eric Edholm

    Lead Draft Writer

With fewer than 100 days until the start of the 2026 NFL campaign, I wanted to drill down on the organizations that figure to start the season most squarely in the camera eye.

This list is not limited to assumed front-runners. Sure, they’re the bulk of the teams facing the most pressure — and the teams with the most non-fans watching from the outside in — but I also wanted to single out some franchises that have been thrust into the spotlight based on offseason moves, coaching changes and/or fan bases tired of losing.

Some teams here will exceed expectations. Others will wither in the face of tension. But there’s little question that each of these nine squads, ranked according to the pressure I expect them to feel, will face a stronger glare than others.

    Buffalo Bills
    2025 record: 12-5

It’s a time for change in Western New York, with Joe Brady replacing Sean McDermott as head coach and Buffalo opening new Highmark Stadium across the street from the old place. The expectations haven’t changed, however: The Bills still view themselves as Super Bowl contenders.

Josh Allen is the biggest reason why. He’s a superstar QB who played at a slightly-less-than-superstar level last season. And though he’ll have some more help at receiver this season, the pressure to win has been raised, as Allen turned 30 this spring. His window to claim a Lombardi Trophy won’t suddenly close if the Bills can’t do it this season, but naysayers will continue to suggest he can’t win the big one.

Brady was a controversial hire, elevated from offensive coordinator to finish the race that McDermott started. Could this situation be similar to Gary Kubiak replacing John Fox in Denver and winning a Super Bowl in Kubiak’s first season? Or might it be a repeat of the Bears firing Lovie Smith after three non-losing seasons and falling off a cliff for the following five years?

With Allen in his prime, it’s hard to imagine him or the Bills suddenly tanking. But after years of near misses — including last season, when the bottom fell out on the AFC — there’s absolutely no guarantee they’ll be able to reach the mountaintop either.

    Los Angeles Rams
    2025 record: 12-5

Recently, I ranked the Rams as having the most complete roster in the NFL despite the division-rival Seahawks beating them twice in three tries last season and hoisting the Lombardi Trophy at season’s end. And that was before the Rams swung one of the biggest NFL trades in recent memory, landing Myles Garrett, which will pair the reigning Defensive Player of the Year with the reigning MVP (Matthew Stafford).

After last season, the area that needed the most help — by far — was the secondary, where Los Angeles made two big additions in CBs Trent McDuffie and Jaylen Watson. By shoring up that position, the Rams have no obvious, glaring weaknesses. Swapping Jared Verse for Garrett is another big upgrade up front. That’s no slight to Verse; Garrett is a generational game-wrecker who just broke the single-season sacks record.

Despite those blockbuster acquisitions, Los Angeles still has to go out and prove its superiority, and the division-rival Seahawks are one of many obstacles the Rams face. L.A. has one of the toughest schedules out there, opening with four 2025 playoff opponents in the first five games and closing the season with a wicked post-bye run.

Stafford recently signed an extension to keep him under contract through 2027, but he seems to be in a year-to-year mindset right now. He turns 39 a week before Super Bowl LXI, which just so happens to be scheduled for SoFi Stadium. The last time the big game was there, Stafford was throwing no-look passes in the Rams’ Super Bowl victory. Could history repeat?

    Kansas City Chiefs
    2025 record: 6-11

The Chiefs have been under the microscope to a degree for more than a decade, and especially during the Patrick Mahomes era. Last season was the first time since Mahomes entered the staring lineup that the playoffs began and the Chiefs were not a threat to win it all.

Instead, they were sent home early, with Mahomes rehabbing a torn ACL. He has maintained that his goal is to return to the field ready for Week 1, and that alone will have extra eyes peering in on Kansas City. Throw in what could be Travis Kelce’s final NFL season, and there will be some nervous energy in Chiefs Kingdom as the team tries to bounce back from an unseemly 6-11 record.

On top of that, there’s the Rashee Rice drama after he recently violated the terms of his probation and was ordered to serve jail time. With Rice, the Chiefs appear to be Super Bowl contenders, but without him — and he’s missed a lot of time via injuries and suspensions in the last two seasons — they lack a clear go-to guy at receiver.

The Broncos and Chargers both finished ahead of the Chiefs last season, with each team sweeping Kansas City in 2025. And the cellar-dwelling Raiders look far friskier after a big offseason. The Chiefs are in a spot they’ve not been in for quite some time — having finished last season with six straight losses — and many will be tuning in to see how they acquit themselves.

    Dallas Cowboys
    2025 record: 7-9-1

The spotlight never really dims on Dallas, but after two straight seven-win seasons, the tension has been raised a notch. Head coach Brian Schottenheimer had the Cowboys playing some decent football after a slow start last season, and they were in the playoff race for a hot minute, but it quickly dissipated when the defense reverted to form.

Dallas added nearly 20 new players on defense, and it wouldn’t be stunning if half of them or more joined the two-deep. Allowing 30 points per outing just won’t cut it again; the Cowboys lost four games and tied another despite scoring 24-plus points. There’s a lot of pressure on 34-year-old Christian Parker to fix this thing in his first year as a defensive coordinator. He’ll have more talent than Dallas fielded last season, for sure, but there is a lot of youth and a lot that must be sorted out — namely, who plays where and how much.

There’s also pressure on Dak Prescott to echo his greatness. All things considered, he was pretty terrific in 2025, but the team also failed to top 20 points in five games last season, losing all of them. The Cowboys still have George Pickens on a one-year deal, but the team says it’s not working on a multi-year extension before the July 15 deadline, so it could be a shorter window for him in Dallas.

The Eagles boast back-to-back division titles, and the Cowboys face a gauntlet of a schedule this season. Do they possess the firepower to make the postseason? That’s a tough question to answer now.

    Baltimore Ravens
    2025 record: 8-9

The Ravens have been one of the more talked-about teams in recent years, and there’s little chance that is changing after John Harbaugh was fired and with QB Lamar Jackson coming off an injury-plagued season.

The assumption is that Baltimore will remain competitive with Jackson back and new head coach Jesse Minter taking over. Minter’s two-year run as Chargers defensive coordinator certainly paints him as a promising hire and a talented coach. The roster appears to be in good shape overall, and many expect the Ravens to be favorites in the AFC North again.

Minter’s specialty is defense, and his Year 1 task will be to improve an underachieving unit. The talent is there, and the addition of Trey Hendrickson could light a fire under the pass-rush group, but we’re still waiting for a clearer picture on the health of Nnamdi Madubuike. The secondary features four former first-round picks, but Baltimore allowed the third-most passing yards in the NFL last season and didn’t make enough plays on the ball.

The Ravens aren’t problem-free on offense, either. Jackson still has something to prove coming off an uneven season. Furthermore, he’s on his third offensive coordinator (30-year-old Declan Doyle) in five seasons, and it’s not clear who Jackson’s starting center will be after the Ravens lost Tyler Linderbaum. Derrick Henry will turn 33 in Week 17, and he’s had four straight 300-touch seasons. Two of Jackson’s top four receivers could be rookies, too.

It will not be shocking if the Ravens rebound quickly under Minter, but there’s a lot of pressure — and plenty to sort out — for the first-year head coach.

    Philadelphia Eagles
    2025 record: 11-6

Much like some other teams on this list, the Eagles often find themselves in the middle of things. There’s always something to talk about in Philly with this team, and this offseason has been no exception. The 2025 season was a topsy-turvy affair, never reaching the championship heights from a year before. Is there still a title-caliber group here? The answer is probably yes, with a schedule that appears pretty manageable, although a fierce NFC field could put a stop to that.

Nick Sirianni has won nearly 70 percent of his 85 regular-season games and has a Super Bowl ring to his name. Meanwhile, Jalen Hurts was an MVP runner-up and a Super Bowl MVP. Yet both men continue to fight for respect. With wide receiver A.J. Brown now in New England, Sirianni and Hurts will be asked to prove themselves without one of their better playmakers in recent years.

If the Eagles can prove that moving on from Brown was addition by subtraction and Philadelphia’s defense maintains its relative excellence, even with some losses on that side of the ball, it could be a bounce-back season. Philly’s pattern has been uncanny the past five seasons: wild-card loser, Super Bowl runner-up, wild-card loser, Super Bowl winner, wild-card loser. The trend suggests the Eagles will be back closer to the top this season, and they have the pieces to make a run.

    Cincinnati Bengals
    2025 record: 6-11

It’s hard to believe that only four head coaches have been with their current teams longer than Zac Taylor has with the Bengals, and that includes Green Bay’s Matt LaFleur, who was hired one month prior to Taylor in Cincinnati. After missing the postseason for three straight seasons and finishing 2025 with the team’s worst record since Taylor’s second season there, the coach absolutely will feel pressure to win — or else.

It’s almost certain that Taylor’s chances of success are directly tied to the health of Joe Burrow. The QB missed more than half the 2025 season with turf toe, and it’s hardly the first time he’s been hurt. When Burrow is on and healthy, he’s as good as there is — with two of the best receivers in the game to throw to in Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins. But without Burrow starting, the Bengals have gone 7-16 under Taylor.

Cincinnati also has major defensive issues to sort through. The Bengals were one of the worst tackling teams in recent memory last season, and they allowed 34-plus points six times, losing all six games. They significantly addressed the defensive front, and new safety Bryan Cook could be a steadying force on the back end. But the team made minimal additions at corner and linebacker, and coordinator Al Golden is facing a lot of pressure to make this a competent unit.

The Bengals play in a tough division, and they’ll open the coming season with three games against 2025 AFC playoff teams in the first four weeks, but the schedule is otherwise pretty friendly. If Burrow can stay healthy and the defense can make even incremental strides, the Bengals could be back in the postseason. Otherwise, it wouldn’t be shocking to see this team broken up in some way in 2027.

    New York Giants
    2025 record: 4-13

The Giants are under the microscope for mostly intriguing reasons, although the backdrop of it all is that this is a franchise with eight losing seasons in the past nine campaigns. That’s a big reason why the team went so hard after John Harbaugh this offseason. His worst mark in the past decade (eight wins) would have been better than all but two Giants teams over the same span.

Jaxson Dart enters Year 2 with some excitement after some solid play as a rookie, and New York features a wealth of young talent overall. There’s some question about the short- and long-term health of Malik Nabers, which clouds the picture a bit, and though the recent return of Odell Beckham Jr. was a headline grabber, it’s anyone’s guess what he can add. This is still an offense that feels a piece or two short of being close to a complete unit.

Defensively, the Giants are far from tip-top, too, even after some strong play late last season. They’re still waiting to see the best versions of first-round picks Kayvon Thibodeaux and Abdul Carter and are hoping that rookie Arvell Reese can slide right in at inside linebacker, a still relatively new position for him.

The Giants probably will have more eyeballs on them this season than they have in years. They open with back-to-back prime-time games and have four over the course of the season. If they can survive those and a tough schedule overall, the G-Men have some surprise-team elements that can’t be overlooked. But if not, the franchise’s losing streak could continue.

    New England Patriots
    2025 record: 14-3

The Patriots have endured a challenging last four months, losing Super Bowl LX, with head coach Mike Vrabel then embroiled in an off-field controversy. Super Bowl losers have struggled more often than not the following season, and the Patriots will have plenty to prove after they sneaked through a faulty AFC field last season only to be blasted by the Seahawks in the final game.

The Patriots took advantage of a very thin regular-season schedule in 2025, and they probably won’t enjoy that same luxury again. New England opens with three of its first four games on the road, and it has tough travel in November and December, too. You can be sure that the Bills will be coming with everything they’ve got after ceding the division to the Patriots a year ago.

Drake Maye also puts the Pats under the microscope. He was a popular MVP candidate heading into the home stretch, and the third-year QB has all the makings of a star for years to come. But he also played poorly at times in the playoffs — likely hindered by a shoulder injury — and must prove he can perform well again.

There are offensive line concerns and pass-rush worries, but New England did finalize the trade for a No. 1 receiver in A.J. Brown. The Patriots are way ahead of schedule in their rebuild, and last year can’t be thrown out, but it wouldn’t be shocking to see them fall back to earth this coming season. They’re back in the spotlight, but for how long?

Patriots WR A.J. Brown on joining childhood team: ‘I know this ain’t heaven, but it’s close to it’
    Published: Jun 02, 2026 at 04:15 PM

    Eric Edholm

    Lead Draft Writer

A.J. Brown is joining the team he grew up rooting for and couldn’t be happier about it.

“My reaction was super excited to play for my childhood team,” Brown said Tuesday after landing with the Patriots via trade this week.

The long-anticipated trade from the Eagles to New England was consummated shortly after 4 p.m. ET on Monday, at which point Philadelphia could lessen some of the dead money involved as a post-June 1 transaction. But for Brown, this has been an even longer time coming.

“Obviously I know this ain’t heaven,” Brown said, “but it’s close to it.”

Brown grew up in Mississippi but became a Patriots fan as a kid who wanted to mimic his older cousin, who was a big Patriots fan. During the 2019 draft, Brown thought there was a good chance the Patriots might select him at the end of Round 1. Instead, they selected another receiver, N’Keal Harry, who last played in the NFL in 2023.

Brown was crushed. He imagined himself playing with Tom Brady and was devastated when the Patriots passed on him, saying he needed to escape his draft party and go “in the closet to try to gather myself because I was just disappointed.” The Titans selected Brown in Round 2 that year, 51st overall.

“It was a tough night. It was a tough night. I joked about it earlier, (the) Patriots (have) been breaking my heart over the years,” Brown said. “Obviously, I wanted to play with Tom. That didn’t happen, but everything happens for a reason.”

    • Patriots trade for Eagles WR A.J. Brown in blockbuster deal

Brown leaves the Eagles after tensions boiled over last season. He appeared frustrated with his role on a struggling offense and didn’t appear to have as close a relationship with quarterback Jalen Hurts. Brown signed a three-year, $96 million extension with the Eagles in 2024 and helped the team to a Super Bowl LIX victory, but the relationship eroded to the point where a trade was deemed necessary — with the Eagles needing to wait until June 1 to avoid a massive salary-cap hit — for all parties.

The Patriots won’t face the Eagles this season but are scheduled to play them in Philadelphia in 2027 (the teams will also hold two days of joint practices this August). The Titans are slated to play in Foxborough that same season.

Brown told New England media that he didn’t want to get into the details of his Philly drama and that “none of that stuff matters” now that he’s a Patriot. But earlier, he noted to NBC’s Maria Taylor that he and Hurts were “not as close as we once were,” although he added that “there’s no bad blood” between them.

“There’s actually still a lot of love,” Brown told Taylor. “I love him to death. I want him to succeed and accomplish all the things that he wants to accomplish. I didn’t truly understand why our friendship became the center of everybody’s attention when it came to football.

“Nothing happened. Nothing happened. People just grow apart.”

Brown might not have wanted to get into further detail about his relationship with Hurts, but he sounded more than happy to talk about his new quarterback, Drake Maye.

“He can make any throw. He’s very poised,” Brown said, noting how Maye commanded a team meeting earlier on Tuesday. “It says so much for a young guy to know what he’s talking about, No. 1, and to lead and to be the voice of this team.

“When I heard that, I was like, ‘Wow that was impressive.’ Obviously, I heard great things about him. But that part alone tells me a lot about him and how much he loves his job, about how he studies and everything.”

Brown also cherishes his relationship with Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel, even if it didn’t begin so well when he first entered the NFL in 2019.

“My first impression? Oh, I did not like (Vrabel). I can say that,” Brown said. “But what it’s grown into? He’s a great guy. He’s a great guy and he coaches hard. He holds his guys accountable. I’m not saying that lightly. He really does. He leads this group, leads the team, and honestly I believe that he’s daring somebody to challenge him. He still thinks he can play.”

Although Brown is less familiar with Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, the two have already spoken, with Brown saying that McDaniels has “given me a whole bunch of ideas.”

Asked what kind of role in the offense Brown would need to feel fulfilled, he said: “I’m fulfilled now.”

Brown is even turning back the clock on his uniform number, going from No. 11 in Tennessee and Philly to No. 1 in New England — the number he wore at Ole Miss and previously. Former Patriots receiver Julian Edelman gave Brown his blessing to wear his No. 11, but Brown was feeling nostalgic.

“Just getting back to my roots, you know? … It’s a match made in heaven going back to my roots and it feels good,” Brown said.

Brown’s arrival in New England happened more than six years after he first envisioned it. It was longer than either he or Patriots fans wanted to wait, and even June 1 took a while to arrive. But now that it’s here and Brown is settled in New England, he’s ready to go.

“To the fans, it’s time. Better late than never. We right on time,” he said. “I’m excited, and I can’t wait to get out there in Gillette Stadium and hear the crowd and make plays and have fun.”

Nate Herbig’s ascension has netted him a lucrative new deal.

The Pittsburgh Steelers and the linebacker have agreed on a four-year, $100 million contract extension that includes $42 million guaranteed, NFL Network Insider Mike Garafolo and ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Tuesday.

Herbig, a fourth-round pick entering the final year of his rookie contract, cashes in with a long-term deal after tallying a career-high 7.5 sacks while producing 30 tackles (13 for loss), three forced fumbles, three passes defensed and his first career interception. With Herbig’s contract year approaching and Pittsburgh carrying playoff expectations into 2026, general manager Omar Khan made sure there were no questions regarding the pass rusher’s future, locking up Herbig at a rate that places him just outside the top 15 annual average salaries for edge rushers in the NFL.

    • Report: Steelers part ways with special teams assistant Derius Swinton II due to violation of club policy

As has been the case for the last decade, edge rusher is a priority position for personnel executives, a reality that is especially true in Pittsburgh.

The Steelers invested heavily in franchise legend T.J. Watt last year, handing him a three-year, $123 million extension, and have already dedicated four years and $68 million to Alex Highsmith in a deal signed in 2023. With Herbig’s $25 million per year salary now included, the Steelers have dedicated $83 million per year to the three rushers, the second-highest total at the position across the NFL, trailing only Houston’s top-heavy deals given to Will Anderson Jr. and Danielle Hunter.

Herbig’s contract is as much a reward as it is a forward-thinking move. At 24 years old, Herbig has proven himself as a quality running mate for Watt, who at 31 years old has already worn plenty of tread off his tires while carrying the Steelers’ rushing unit and has also encountered minor injury hurdles in recent years. By signing Herbig now, the Steelers are securing his services beyond the length of Watt’s contract, ensuring they have one rising rusher in their future plans.

Herbig’s career-best season in sacks came alongside 45 QB pressures — tying with Highsmith in the category — and a QB pressure rate of 13.7% while flashing an average get-off of 0.84 seconds. As he enters the prime of his explosive career, Herbig can proceed confidently knowing his financial future is secure.

The Rams rocked the NFL offseason by swinging a trade for two-time AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett on Monday.

Could there be even more thunder headed toward Los Angeles?

Rumors and internet speculation started since the trade that Aaron Donald could consider coming out of retirement to rejoin the Rams this season. Even with Donald two seasons removed from his last NFL game, the idea of a Donald-Garrett pairing could be a shocking pairing for opponents.

Asked on Tuesday about the possibility of Donald returning, Rams head coach Sean McVay didn’t exactly pour cold water on the idea.

“Listen, if he’s interested,” McVay said during Garrett’s introductory news conference. “Here’s what I’ll say: You talk to Aaron and you see what he’s saying about that.”

Rams general manager Les Snead, who orchestrated the Garrett trade over the past several days, had trouble hiding a smirk on his face while the question about Donald was being asked. McVay admitted that he spoke with Donald about the Garrett addition.

“Here’s what I would tell you guys overall, too: Aaron is a guy that I stay really close in touch with, and I know the respect that he has for Myles,” McVay said. “Talked to him about the opportunity to bring him on board. If Aaron decides he wants to dust ’em off at the age of 35, I bet you he can still do it at a pretty high clip.”

Former teammate Michael Brockers started the Donald speculation when he hinted on Monday on the Rams Squad Show podcast that the Garrett trade could spur Donald out of retirement — and that No. 99 has been getting in shape, just in case. ESPN’s Pat McAfee reached out to Donald on Tuesday, saying that “sources” indicated that Donald was interested but that he needed to see if he could stoke the fire again at age 35.

Donald is a three-time Defensive Player of the Year, racking up 111 sacks, 176 tackles for loss and 24 forced fumbles in 154 career games. He last appeared in the Rams’ playoff loss at Detroit in the 2023 postseason on Jan. 14, 2024.

If Donald returns, it will have been nearly a thousand days since his last NFL game when the Rams hit the field in Australia for the Week 1 opener versus the 49ers, and it would restart his clock for the Pro Football Hall of Fame, for which he’s a first-ballot favorite. But it also potentially could give the Rams one of the best rush units in recent memory, with Kobie Turner, Poona Ford, Braden Fiske, Tyler Davis, Ty Hamilton and Donald inside and Byron Young, Josaiah Stewart, Desjuan Johnson and Garrett outside.

The Rams already made two massive offseason additions to their defense with cornerbacks Trent McDuffie and Jaylen Watson. Adding Garrett this week has raised the expectations higher, even as the division-rival Seahawks are reigning Super Bowl champs. But if Donald were to rejoin his former team, the Rams might be the preseason favorites to win Super Bowl LXI.

Donald apparently hasn’t said no yet, and McVay didn’t quash the idea of him returning. That alone should have Rams fans dreaming even bigger.

Drake London has hauled in his biggest catch yet.

The standout wide receiver and the Atlanta Falcons have agreed to terms on a four-year, $141 million contract extension that includes $100 million guaranteed and can be worth up to $150 million, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport and ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Tuesday.

London’s annual average salary of $35.25 million per year places him third among the league’s highest-paid WRs, just above the Minnesota Vikings’ Justin Jefferson, according to Over the Cap.

With questions going into the season as to who will get the bulk of the starts at quarterback in 2026 — Tua Tagovailoa or Michael Penix Jr. — new team president Matt Ryan and new general manager Ian Cunningham have rewarded Atlanta’s top target regardless of who’s going to be throwing him the ball.

Since landing London with the No. 8 overall pick of the 2022 NFL Draft, Atlanta has found the USC product to be a reliable playmaker.

Across his four NFL seasons, London is averaging 77.3 receptions for 990.3 yards and 5.5 touchdowns per year, having led the Falcons in receptions and receiving yards in his first three campaigns before missing time due to injury in 2025.

What London has been able to put on the field has been all the more impressive considering he’s had four different Week 1 starting quarterbacks throwing to him in as many years: Marcus Mariota, Desmond Ridder, Kirk Cousins and Penix. With Penix coming back from a knee injury, it’s quite likely Tagovailoa could continue the Week 1 starter merry go-round.

Though London has his second contract, he’s still looking for his first Pro Bowl nod, a snub most eye-opening when considering his all-star 2024 showing in which he had career bests of 100 receptions, 1,271 yards and nine touchdowns.

Hip and knee ailments prevented London, 24, from bettering those numbers last season, as he sat five games after missing just one in his career previously.

As Atlanta enters a new era with Ryan running the show as team president and a new GM in the front office and new head coach (Kevin Stefanski) on the sideline, London and running back extraordinaire Bijan Robinson will continue to be offensive focal points going forward.

With a new age taking shape for the Falcons, it’s been made clear that London is one of the pillars for the present and future.
