      • New champs Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart throw out first pitches at Yankee Stadium

NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Knicks’ victory tour following their first NBA championship since 1973 made another stop Wednesday night when Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart threw out ceremonial first pitches at Yankee Stadium.

Brunson and Hart were met with a standing ovation and loud cheers from fans as they took the field to a montage of highlights from the title run before the Yankees played the Chicago White Sox.

Standing in front of the mound and wearing Yankees pinstripes, Brunson made his toss to backup catcher J.C. Escarra while Hart threw to utilityman Max Schuemann.

“Oh, I think’s it been awesome,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. “What a fun team to get behind and just the story of that team and how it’s kind of come together over the last couple of years and just a lot of grit, a lot of mental fortitude. And to see the fanbase and then some galvanized around that club has been a lot of fun to witness.”

Brunson and Hart were honored after the Knicks made appearances on NBC’s “The Today Show” and “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” on Monday. Brunson and Hart along with starters Karl-Anthony Towns, Mikal Bridges and OG Anunoby also appeared on ABC’s “Good Morning America” on Monday.

The ceremony occurred a day before the Knicks will be honored with a massive ticker-tape parade in lower Manhattan. Mayor Zohran Mamdani predicted Thursday’s celebration could be “the largest parade in New York City history.”

The parade will also be the first for the Knicks, who won their first two NBA championships in 1970 and 1973. After those titles, then-Mayor John Lindsay celebrated the team at the mayoral mansion and City Hall.

Brunson threw out a first pitch for the second time since joining the Knicks. He also did it before a Mets-Yankees game in July 2024 shortly after signing a four-year, $156.5 million contract to stay with the Knicks.

Brunson averaged 32.6 points in New York’s five-game victory over the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Finals and won MVP honors. He led the Knicks to a 94-90 victory in the clinching Game 5 by scoring 45 points.

Hart is a great-nephew of former Yankees catcher Elston Howard, whose No. 32 jersey is retired by the team. Howard is also honored with a plaque in Monument Park.

The Knicks finished 16-3 in the postseason, an .842 winning percentage that matched the 2024 Boston Celtics for second-best since the format changed to best-of-seven series in all NBA playoff rounds beginning in 2003. The 2017 Golden State Warriors went 16-1.

New York won 13 consecutive postseason games, second to Golden State’s 15 in a row in 2017, and set records by winning nine straight road games and outscoring their postseason opponents by 283 points.

Brunson and the Knicks also pulled off several big comebacks on the way to their title.

“It’s just been a captivating run that they’ve been on and with a group that’s now been together for a couple of years and then on top of the 53 years since a championship, it’s been a great story and a fan base that has come to know several of these guys as they’ve kind of climbed that ladder to ultimately winning a championship,” Boone said. “So I think it’ll be one of the historic teams that we talk about when it comes to the NBA.”

      • Tiago Splitter takes over as Bulls coach, promises team will compete

CHICAGO (AP) — Growing up in Brazil, Tiago Splitter used to watch Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls in the middle of the night.

“Hidden from my parents and at 1 a.m., watching M.J. games and rooting for the Bulls,” Splitter said with a wry grin.

That was the most successful period in franchise history. Now the Bulls are hoping to start another winning era with Splitter on the sideline.

The 41-year-old Splitter was formally introduced on Wednesday as the 25th coach in franchise history. He brings a wealth of experience that includes seven years in the NBA as a player and a challenging season as the interim coach of the Portland Trail Blazers.

The addition of Splitter is the team’s most significant move since Bryson Graham took over as executive vice president of basketball operations on May 4. The 6-foot-11 Splitter emerged from a crowded field of candidates that reportedly included Minnesota Timberwolves assistant Micah Nori, Atlanta Hawks assistant Ryan Schmidt and Wes Unseld Jr., who was on Chicago’s coaching staff last season.

While describing why Splitter was the choice, Graham praised the coach’s competitiveness and his ability to connect with players.

“We are at the ground floor,” Graham said. “And so when you have someone that has a vision that aligns with yours, that knows how you want to play, and how to build a program, we just, I mean, we couldn’t be more excited.”

Splitter coached Portland to a 42-40 record and a five-game loss to San Antonio in the first round of the playoffs. It was the first playoff appearance and first time the Trail Blazers finished with a winning record since the 2020-21 season.

“It wasn’t an easy situation,” Splitter said. “I think, you know, as the season went to the finish, to the end, we almost forgot about it and that was the great thing. … That was most important thing for me, just like leaving the outside noise out of the picture and focusing on basketball and by the end, you’re having like a clear goal and finish the way we finished.”

Splitter spent time with San Antonio, Atlanta and Philadelphia during his playing career. He was selected by the Spurs in the first round of the 2007 draft, and he helped the team win an NBA title in 2014.

He worked for Brooklyn for five seasons from 2018-23, first as a pro scout and then as an assistant coach. He was an assistant for Houston for one year before coaching Paris Basketball Club to a French Cup championship during the 2024-25 season.

That experience — both playing and coaching — was an appealing attribute, Graham said.

“He’s got a phenomenal story,” he said.

Splitter is replacing Billy Donovan, who resigned after six seasons. The Bulls had conversations with Donovan about returning, but he decided to step aside rather than work with a new front office.

Chicago allowed 121.5 points per game this season, ranking 28th overall in the NBA. It finished with a 31-51 record while missing the playoffs for the fourth straight year.

The Bulls pick No. 4 and No. 15 in next week’s draft, and they also have plenty of salary-cap space going into free agency. But Splitter offered a diplomatic answer when asked about expectations for next season.

“I can guarantee you one thing: We’re going to compete every night,” he said. “And we’re going to have high standards with everything that we do.”

      • Yelich and Chourio homer as the Brewers beat the Guardians 9-4

MILWAUKEE — — Christian Yelich and Jackson Chourio homered and the Milwaukee Brewers scored seven runs in the first four innings in a 9-4 victory over the Cleveland Guardians on Wednesday night.

Chourio’s two-run shot in the fourth gave him six homers in his last seven games.

One night after making his major league debut, Milwaukee’s Cooper Pratt got his first hit and scored his first run in the second inning. Pratt also singled home a run in the eighth for his first RBI.

Cleveland wasted a grand slam from Daniel Schneemann as Gavin Williams (9-4) allowed a career-high seven earned runs in five innings. Williams had given up seven runs just once before, in a 9-3 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Aug. 24, 2023. Only five of the runs were earned in that 2023 appearance.

Williams was bidding for his 10th win of the season, which would have enabled him to match Milwaukee’s Aaron Ashby for the major league lead.

But he struggled right from the start.

Yelich led off the first inning by connecting on a 3-2 pitch and delivering a 387-foot shot to left center. Two outs later, Williams issued back-to-back walks to William Contreras and Jake Bauers before Sal Frelick doubled home both runners.

Milwaukee made it 5-0 in the second as Yelich singled home Pratt and scored on Brice Turang’s double.

After not putting any runners on base in the first three innings, Cleveland got back into the game in the fourth. Milwaukee’s Brandon Sproat loaded the bases on two walks and a single before Schneemann sent a 2-2 pitch over the right-field wall to cut the Brewers’ lead to 5-4.

Sproat left with a right hamstring cramp later in the fourth inning.

Chad Patrick (4-3) struck out seven and allowed one hit in 3 1/3 innings of shutout relief to help preserve Milwaukee’s lead. Cleveland got just three hits all night.

      • Kyle Bradish strikes out career-best 12 as Orioles sink Mariners 5-3

SEATTLE — — Kyle Bradish struck out a career-high 12 while pitching one-run ball into the eighth inning as the Baltimore Orioles beat the Seattle Mariners 5-3 on Wednesday night.

Gunnar Henderson and Jackson Holliday homered to help the Orioles stop a three-game skid. Bradish (4-7) allowed five hits and two walks in 7 2/3 innings, throwing 65 of his 100 pitches for strikes.

Yennier Cano got the final out in the eighth and Ryan Helsley gave up home runs to Dominic Canzone and Cole Young on his first two pitches in the ninth before closing it out in his first appearance since April 28.

Blaze Alexander had a one-out single off George Kirby (5-7) in the third and Henderson hit his 15th homer one out later for a 2-0 lead.

Julio Rodríguez doubled in the fourth to become the third-fastest player in major league history to reach 125 homers, doubles and stolen bases.

The 25-year-old center fielder needed 665 games to accomplish the feat. The only players to do it faster were Ronald Acuña Jr. (591 games) and Alfonso Soriano (643 games).

Canzone followed with an RBI single that cut it to 2-1.

Rodríguez was removed after speaking with an athletic trainer in the dugout following a strikeout to end the sixth. After the game, Mariners manager Dan Wilson told reporters Rodríguez felt a spasm in his hamstring.

Pete Alonso had an infield hit and Leodys Taveras followed with a two-out triple to give Baltimore a 3-1 lead in the sixth. Orioles right fielder Tyler O’Neill took away a solo home run from Cal Raleigh in the bottom half.

Holliday drew a leadoff walk from Alex Hoppe in the seventh, advanced to third on a single by Alexander and scored on double-play grounder by Taylor Ward to make it 4-1.

Holliday homered for the fourth time this season in the ninth, a solo shot off Michael Rucker.

Alexander went 3 for 3 with a walk and a stolen base.

Canzone hit his 11th home run to start the ninth against Helsley, and Young followed with his sixth. It was the first two homers allowed this season by the right-hander, who came off the injured list Tuesday after being sidelined by right elbow inflammation.

      • Mariners’ Julio Rodríguez exits loss with hamstring spasm

SEATTLE — Mariners outfielder Julio Rodríguez left Wednesday night’s 5-3 loss to the Baltimore Orioles after ending the sixth inning with a strikeout.

The three-time All-Star was seen talking to a team athletic trainer before exiting the dugout. Manager Dan Wilson told reporters after the game that Rodríguez had a hamstring spasm.

Rodríguez was 1-for-3 with a double, giving him 125 doubles to go along with 125 homers and 125 stolen bases in his career.

He reached those totals in 665 major league games, making Rodríguez, 25, the third-fastest player to do it.

Atlanta Braves star Ronald Acuna Jr. was the fastest at 591 games, and former big leaguer Alfonso Soriano, a seven-time All-Star, pulled off the feat in 643 games, according to Sportradar.

      • 2026 MLB ABS challenge system tracker: Team, player rankings

Major League Baseball implemented the ABS challenge system for the 2026 season, which allows players to challenge a ball or strike call made by the plate umpire. Each team receives two challenges to start the game, and only batters, pitchers and catchers can challenge a call. If a team wins a challenge, it can keep challenging. If a team challenges incorrectly twice, it loses its challenges for the rest of the game.

Here are the ABS challenge system rankings for batters, catchers, teams and umpires for the 2026 MLB season.

Data updated through Wednesday, June 17.

      • Ryan O’Hearn knocks in career-high 6 runs as Pirates roll to 12-4 victory over Athletics

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. — — Ryan O’Hearn homered, doubled and singled to finish with a career-high six RBI as the Pittsburgh Pirates romped to a 12-4 victory Wednesday night over the Athletics.

Marcell Ozuna also went deep for the Pirates, who racked up 16 hits. They scored at least 10 runs for the seventh time this season, matching their 2025 total.

Braxton Ashcraft (6-3) struck out seven in six innings. He allowed two runs, one earned, and four hits.

Pittsburgh’s first four batters reached safely, and a two-run double by O’Hearn made it 3-0. He added a two-run homer to left field in the fourth to stretch the margin to 7-0.

Jacob Wilson’s two-run single trimmed it to 7-2 in the sixth before the Pirates tacked on five more in the seventh. Ozuna launched a 448-foot solo shot to center field, Spencer Horwitz drew a bases-loaded walk, Brandon Lowe hit a sacrifice fly and O’Hearn had a two-run single.

Henry Bolte homered for the A’s in the seventh. Zack Gelof went deep in the ninth to extend the longest active hitting streak in the majors to 21 games.

Aaron Civale (5-3) gave up six runs and nine hits in three-plus innings.
