  • Kylian Mbappé sparks France with 2 goals in 3-1 win over Senegal at the World Cup

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — After a flat first half, Kylian Mbappé got France back in tune.

Mbappé scored twice to move past Pelé with 14 World Cup goals, celebrating by mimicking a flutist as he had promised, and Les Bleus beat Senegal 3-1 Tuesday in their World Cup opener.

“He could have scored four or five goals, OK, theoretically, but we’re happy with two goals,” France coach Didier Deschamps said.

Mbappé had 14 touches in the scoreless first half, the fewest of any player, then put France ahead in the 66th minute. He burst past Senegal captain Kalidou Koulibaly, turned onto a diagonal pass from Michael Olise and slid the ball past goalkeeper Édouard Mendy from just outside the 6-yard box.

In a segment with Mbappé taped May 20 and aired Friday by U.S. broadcaster Fox, award-winning actor and television host James Corden suggested the 27-year-old star striker celebrate his next World Cup goal by imitating a flute player. Mbappé practiced the instrument for a year or two as a child at the behest of his parents.

“I’ll do it for you first game,” Mbappé said.

Mbappé ran toward a corner, brought both hands to his lips and air-tooted for a few seconds.

“If he wants to miss the first half again and score two goals in the second half in another match, that’s OK with me,” Deschamps said.

Bradley Barcola doubled the lead in the 82nd, two minutes after entering, and Ibrahim Mbaye cut the deficit in the fifth minute of stoppage time. Mbappé scored just 68 seconds later on a spectacular right-footed shot from 30 yards. The ball dipped perfectly between Mendy’s outstretched left arm and the crossbar.

“A crazy goal,” French defender William Saliba said.

Mbappé, who led the 2022 tournament with eight goals, moved one ahead of Lionel Messi and fellow Frenchman Just Fontaine on the World Cup career scoring list before Messi scored his 14th, 15th and 16th for Argentina later Tuesday. Mbappé is tied with Germany’s Gerd Müller, trailing Messi, Germany’s Miroslav Klose (16) and Brazil’s Ronaldo (15).

“I’m sure that he will do it,” Saliba said of Mbappé setting the record.

Mbappé also became France’s career scoring leader with 58 goals, one more than Olivier Giroud.

“He can from time to time miss a game or two but on one action he really is able to tip the scales and bring his team to victory,” Deschamps said. “People say he doesn’t defend enough. Well, he’s not here to defend.”

    Mbappé brushed off critics.

“It’s not about revenge,” he said. “If I started playing for all the people who criticize me just to silence them, I’d have to play until I was 80.”

Trying to reach its third straight World Cup final, France plays Iraq on Monday in Philadelphia, then closes Group I on June 26 against Norway at Foxborough, Massachusetts. Senegal meets Norway on Monday at MetLife Stadium and finishes the first round against Iraq at Toronto.

With fans in Senegal denied visas by the U.S. government, supporters of the Lions of Teranga appeared limited to a few sections in MetLife’s southwest corner on a sunny 77-degree Fahrenheit (25-degree Celsius) afternoon.

While most of the stadium was filled with a just-under sellout crowed of 80,545, there were empty seats in a mezzanine club level, which has air-conditioned suites behind the outdoor chairs.

Two hours before kickoff, tickets dropped to as low as $69 on FIFA’s resale site. FIFA sold tickets at $220-$620 in December.

France was outshot 5-1 in the first half. Senegal striker Nicolas Jackson’s 25th-minute shot hit a post, rebounded off the heel of goalkeeper Mike Maignan and bounced into touch.

Les Bleus then outshot their opponents 10-1 in the second half, when Olise shifted centrally from the right flank.

“If we had been more efficient, by halftime, we would have been able to lead 1- or 2-nil,” Senegal coach Pape Thiaw said.

  • Messi hat-trick equals scoring record as Argentina dazzle against Algeria

Argentina’s Lionel Messi completed his first World Cup hat-trick at the 76th minute to tie with Germany’s Miroslav Klose as the tournament’s joint-top scorer with a record 16 goals.

KANSAS CITY, United States: Lionel Messi scored a dazzling hat-trick for Argentina on Tuesday (Jun 16) to equal Miroslav Klose’s all-time record of 16 goals at World Cups as the defending champions swept Algeria aside 3-0.

On a night for the ages in Kansas City, the records kept tumbling for Argentina’s miracle man, considered by many to be the greatest footballer of all time.

When the match kicked off at the home of the NFL’s Kansas City Chiefs, Messi became the first player to feature in six World Cup tournaments in his 200th international match.

And the 38-year-old, who made his first appearance at a World Cup as a teenager in 2006, lit up the occasion with three goals in a clinical display by the reigning champions.

“To enjoy this with my family, with my teammates, the ones who are always there, is a really beautiful moment,” the Inter Miami star said. “I’m happy.”

He added: “I’m grateful to the fans, because once again they’ve shown that Argentina is crazy about this. We packed the stadium again.”

Messi produced a majestic finish from distance in the 17th minute, sparking a frenzy among his adoring fans, who had turned the match into a virtual home game.

He netted again in the second half from close range, gobbling up a rebound to take him just one goal behind the all-time record held by Germany’s Miroslav Klose.

And Messi completed his first hat-trick at a World Cup with an unstoppable finish in the 76th minute.

The diminutive genius was substituted shortly afterwards, forcing Argentine fans to wait to see their hero have a shot at the outright record.

    MESSI MAGIC

The Group J match in the open-air stadium started at a frantic pace and both sides had early goals ruled out for offside, including one from Messi.

But Argentina took the lead when Rodrigo De Paul played a beautifully measured through ball, which Messi picked up before driving at goal and unleashing a fierce drive from outside the penalty area that curled away from goalkeeper Luca Zidane.

The South American team were largely in control, fluid in attack with their revered number 10 pulling the strings.

But as the clock ticked towards half-time, Algeria enjoyed a better spell, with Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez forced to parry a shot from Fares Chaibi.

Messi curled another effort over the bar in the early minutes of the second half and Zidane kept out a shot from Lautaro Martinez.

But the crowd did not have to wait long to celebrate another goal from the veteran Inter Miami forward.

Zidane failed to deal with a sizzling Alexis Mac Allister strike and Messi was there to sweep home in the 60th minute.

Time stood still six minutes later as Messi was through again, but this time, Zidane pushed the ball over the bar.

However, he was not to be denied, completing his hat-trick after being set up by substitute Nico Gonzalez.

“I don’t have the words to describe Messi,” Argentina boss Lionel Scaloni said. “For 20 years, he’s had us used to seeing things like this, and he inspires everyone who watches him play.”

Argentina are seeking to become the first back-to-back winners of the World Cup since Brazil managed the feat in 1962.

Earlier, the roads around the Kansas City Stadium were clogged as tens of thousands of Argentine fans streamed towards the ground dressed in blue and white, many with Messi’s name on the back of their shirts.

Argentina’s all-time top-scorer is just the third man to reach 200 caps after Cristiano Ronaldo and Kuwait’s Bader Al-Mutawa.

Ronaldo will equal Messi’s record of six World Cup appearances if he plays for Portugal against DR Congo on Wednesday.

  • Ohtani hits 15th homer as Dodgers beat Rays 1-0

LOS ANGELES — — Shohei Ohtani hit his 15th home run of the season and Justin Wrobleski threw six innings to lead the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 1-0 win over the Tampa Bay Rays.

Ohtani hit a first-pitch solo home run off Drew Rasmussen in the sixth inning to break a scoreless game.

The home run to center field was just the cushion the left-handed Wrobleski (8-2) needed. Wrobleski allowed just three hits, stuck out five and walked none.

Tanner Scott earned his ninth save of the season after retiring the side in the ninth.

Rasmussen (6-3) pitched well, too, with his only blemish being the Ohtani home run. Rasmussen threw seven innings and allowed one run on six hits. He struck out seven.

Ohtani has been heating up at the plate, with four home runs in the last six games. He will not bat Wednesday but he is pitching for the first time since knee inflammation caused him to miss a game last week.

Ohtani was 1-for-4 Tuesday with two strikeouts.

The pitchers duel featured just one walk and moved at a rapid pace. The game finished in just 1 hour, 52 minutes.

  • Dodgers’ Shohei Ohtani (knee) to make scheduled start Wed.

LOS ANGELES — Shohei Ohtani will make his scheduled start on the mound against the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said.

Ohtani (6-2, 1.06 ERA) left last Thursday’s game in Pittsburgh because of left knee inflammation. He sat out the next day’s game against the White Sox in Chicago, then returned for Saturday’s game. This will be his first start since the injury in Pittsburgh.

Roberts said Tuesday the swelling in Ohtani’s knee had “completely dissipated.”

“I saw that he had just a catch-play right now,” Roberts said of Ohtani’s work. “He’s going to do his touchy-feely deal from the mound in a little bit. I saw him play some catch. Looks good, feels good. Look forward to him making a start tomorrow.”

Wednesday’s game against the Rays is an early afternoon start. It’s a tight window to prep and an early start.

“He likes his sleep. It’s certainly not ideal, but the calendar is the calendar,” Roberts said. “He’ll get his rest and do what he can to post tomorrow. … Anyone that has anything that has a potential red flag, we’ll certainly be watching closely. But again, he wouldn’t start if we felt that we were going to put him in harm’s way. He’s a competitor.”

Asked if Ohtani will bat in addition to pitching, Roberts said before Tuesday night’s game that he was undecided, but after the 1-0 win over the Rays he said Ohtani would not hit on Wednesday.

In his last pitching start last Wednesday, Ohtani gave up four runs — three earned runs — in 6⅔ innings and the Dodgers lost to Pittsburgh 9-8.

Also Tuesday, utility man Tommy Edman was reinstated by the Dodgers following offseason ankle surgery.

Edman, who was the 2024 NLCS MVP in the Dodgers World Series championship year, will make his season debut soon, although he didn’t play Tuesday.

“The good thing was, I saw progress with every step along the way. It just wasn’t as fast as I expected,” Edman said.

Santiago Espinal was designated for assignment.

  • Cal Raleigh delivers decisive hit in return from injured list as Mariners top Orioles 3-1

SEATTLE — — Cal Raleigh hit a two-run single in his return from the injured list, Logan Gilbert struck out a season-high 10 in seven strong innings and the Seattle Mariners beat the Baltimore Orioles 3-1 on Tuesday night.

Julio Rodríguez had an RBI single for the Mariners, who hold a slim lead in the AL West. Gilbert (5-4) combined with two relievers on a three-hitter.

Raleigh, last year’s AL MVP runner-up who had been out since May 14 because of an oblique strain, broke a 1-all tie in the seventh. Batting from the right side against reliever Grant Wolfram with the bases loaded and one out, the switch-hitter sent a line drive to center field that scored Victor Robles and Colt Emerson.

Eduard Bazardo pitched a perfect eighth and Andrés Muñoz worked a one-hit ninth for his 11th save.

Gilbert gave up a leadoff double to Taylor Ward and a two-out RBI single to Samuel Basallo in the first, but retired his next 16 batters until hitting Pete Alonso with a pitch to start the seventh.

Seattle tied it in the third when Rodríguez lined a two-out single after Orioles starter Brandon Young (5-2) walked Miles Mastrobuoni and J.P. Crawford with one out.

Young gave up three runs and four hits in six-plus innings. He was removed after allowing an infield single to Robles and another single to Emerson in the seventh.

Crawford went 1 for 2 with two walks in his return from the injured list.

  • Seattle Mariners place outfielder Randy Arozarena on IL

SEATTLE — The Seattle Mariners on Tuesday placed outfielder Randy Arozarena on the 10-day injured list with a left hamstring strain.

The move, announced prior to the team opening a series against the Baltimore Orioles, is retroactive to Saturday.

Arozarena hasn’t played since Friday, in a 10-2 win over the Washington Nationals. An MRI on Tuesday showed mild inflammation.

“We had hoped to go day to day with the feeling that he could be back as soon as tomorrow,” Mariners general manager Justin Hollander said. “Every opinion from our medical people on how Randy was testing out indicated that he was very likely trending in the right direction and was a real possibility to be available tomorrow. The MRI cast a little doubt on that.”

The Mariners already have Luke Raley and Josh Naylor experiencing minor day-to-day health issues, so the team was risking playing with an almost empty bench Tuesday night if it didn’t make a move.

“We don’t anticipate a stay on the IL longer than the minimum,” Hollander said of Arozarena. “But we can’t play three people short for any length of time.”

The Arozarena news came on the same day Seattle welcomed back catcher Cal Raleigh. The runner-up in American League MVP voting last season after hitting 60 home runs, Raleigh was reinstated from the 10-day injured list and was in the lineup and behind the plate against the Orioles.

Raleigh had been out since May 14 with a right oblique strain, the first IL stint of his career. Seattle went 15-13 without him and was still leading the AL West, but the team finished 4-6 recently on a 10-game trip through Detroit, Baltimore and Washington.

“I’m just really just excited to get back,” said Raleigh, who hit .412 (7-for-17) with five home runs and 12 RBIs in a five-game rehab assignment with High-A Everett and Triple-A Tacoma. “I missed it a lot, and it was a fun week getting back out there. I’m really excited just to get back to it, be with the guys, and get back in the thick of it.”

Veteran shortstop J.P. Crawford, who had been on the injured list since June 5 after being hit in the hand by a pitch at Detroit, also returned to action Tuesday. He was promptly inserted as the starting third baseman for the first time this season as the club continues to see what rookie shortstop Colt Emerson can do.

“Getting Cal back is huge,” manager Dan Wilson said. “Having him behind the plate and active and ready to go is a huge lift. And J.P. coming back as well. I think we’re excited to be back home and ready to play in front of the home folks.”

To complete the Arozarena move, the Mariners selected the contract of outfielder Curtis Washington Jr. from High-A Everett, because that team was playing in the area.

In other roster moves, catcher Jhonny Pereda was optioned to Tacoma, and third baseman Will Wilson (broken left thumb) was transferred to the 60-day injured list.

  • Mike Trout homers as Angels shut out Diamondbacks 7-0

PHOENIX — — Mike Trout hit a two-run home run and an RBI double for the Los Angeles Angels in a 7-0 shutout of the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday night.

Trout’s 436-foot two-run shot to center came in the fifth inning and gave the Angels a 5-0 lead, and his sixth-inning double drove in Denzer Guzman.

Reid Detmers (3-5) worked seven innings for the Halos, allowing no runs on three hits and striking out three. He has allowed three or fewer earned runs in each of his last five outings and nine of his last 10.

Wade Meckler hit an RBI single in the second to get the Halos on the board first, followed by a solo home run by Zach Neto in the third. Donovan Walton hit an RBI single in the fourth and a ground-rule double in the eighth to bring Logan O’Hoppe across.

The Angels combined for 14 hits, paced by O’Hoppe’s 3-for-4 night.

Adrian Del Castillo got the first hit of the game for the D-backs in the third inning. Ketel Marte and Geraldo Perdomo both singled in the sixth, and Corbin Carroll had a one-out infield base hit in the ninth. Arizona went 0-for-3 with runners in scoring position and stranded five baserunners.

Kirby Yates and Chase Silseth combined for two scoreless innings of relief to close out the game.

Merrill Kelly (5-6) gave up 11 hits and six earned runs in 5 1/3 innings for the D-backs. He struck out four and walked one.

  • 2026 MLB ABS challenge system tracker: Team, player rankings

Major League Baseball implemented the ABS challenge system for the 2026 season, which allows players to challenge a ball or strike call made by the plate umpire. Each team receives two challenges to start the game, and only batters, pitchers and catchers can challenge a call. If a team wins a challenge, it can keep challenging. If a team challenges incorrectly twice, it loses its challenges for the rest of the game.

Here are the ABS challenge system rankings for batters, catchers, teams and umpires for the 2026 MLB season.

Data updated through Tuesday, June 16.

  • Lowe hits go-ahead homer, Reynolds goes deep twice as Pirates rally past Athletics for 6-5 victory

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. — — Brandon Lowe hit a tiebreaking homer in the ninth inning, Bryan Reynolds went deep twice and the Pittsburgh Pirates rallied from an early four-run deficit to beat the Athletics 6-5 on Tuesday night.

Reynolds finished with four hits, three RBI and three runs scored. Ryan O’Hearn also had three hits for the Pirates (37-37), who had lost eight of 10.

Zack Gelof went 3 for 3 with a homer and two RBI for the A’s, extending his hitting streak to 20 games — the longest active run in the majors.

  • Broncos excuse Jonathon Cooper from minicamp after arrests

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The Denver Broncos excused outside linebacker Jonathon Cooper from their mandatory minicamp this week after he was arrested twice in a seven-day span on multiple domestic violence charges, including one felony.

“He’s taking this time, obviously, he’s got to work on himself,” Broncos coach Sean Payton said after Tuesday’s practice. “The club is very much in tuned to the league office, local authorities here, and we’ve had several meetings. Clearly from an ownership standpoint, head coach, organizationally, there’s a bar that we have, and an expectation that we have, that’s very high. We’ll consider all of that as we continue to gather the information … we’re continuing to go through that process, and we take it very seriously.”

The 28-year-old Cooper, who practiced during the team’s OTAs the previous two weeks, was first arrested June 4 by police in Parker, Colorado, after an argument and confrontation with his girlfriend. He faced multiple charges from that arrest, one of which was upgraded to felony second-degree assault Wednesday. Cooper was arrested again Thursday on multiple charges that included harassment.

Cooper appeared in Douglas County (Colorado) Court on Friday and was released on a personal recognizance bond and ordered to abide by a strict “no contact” protection order. He also must have prior court approval for any travel outside of Colorado.

On Tuesday, the Broncos opened their mandatory minicamp, the only offseason activity players can be fined for missing. It is scheduled to run through Thursday to close their offseason program.

Cooper’s long-term future with the team remains a question. The Broncos will open training camp in the last week of July. Cooper is scheduled for motions hearings on July 6 and July 14 (one for each arrest), with a jury trial scheduled to begin July 22.

When asked Tuesday if the Broncos were going to let the legal process reach a conclusion before the team made a decision on Cooper’s future, Payton said: “There’s a process period from the league and that involves the local law enforcement. We’ll continue to gather that information.”

Cooper also could face a suspension for violating the league’s personal conduct policy. A league spokesman said last week the NFL was monitoring the case.
