Song Yadong took a big step forward on his quest to chase down an elusive shot at UFC gold on Saturday. Yadong scored a resounding submission victory over Deiveson Figueiredo in the bantamweight main event of UFC Fight Night from Macau, China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Yadong and Figueiredo fought a slow-paced first round, with the fighters trying to feel each other out and nail down timing and distance. One constant attack established by Yadong in the opening round was a steady stream of hard leg kicks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Those leg kicks kept coming in the second round, but Yadong also began to add in hard right hands. Figueiredo was finding less success with his own strikes and was forced to switch stances at times due to the damage being done to his legs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Figueiredo also struggled to find success with takedowns, with Yadong using solid sprawling along with his strength advantage to shrug off Figueiredo’s attempts to get the fight to the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The one time Figueiredo was able to secure a takedown also proved to be his undoing as he was immediately caught in a tight arm-in guillotine choke. Yadong’s squeeze on the choke was enough to force a quick tap from the Brazilian, ending the fight at the 4:42 mark of Round 2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The win was a big one for Yadong, who was looking to bounce back from a disappointing decision loss to Sean O’Malley at UFC 324 in January. Yadong entered the fight as the No. 5-ranked bantamweight in the official UFC rankings. As for what’s next, Yadong told his Chinese countrymen after the fight, “I don’t give f—. I take whatever UFC gives me. Let’s go.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A two-time former flyweight champion, Figueiredo found success after moving up to bantamweight, winning three fights in a row, but has since fallen on hard times, dropping to 1-4 in his five most recent fights after Saturday’s loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Figueiredo tried to throw some straight shots, but it was Yadong who landed a hard right hand. Yadong continued firing leg kicks and caught a body kick for a quick takedown. Figueiredo was able to stand, but Yadong held the leg and landed a few solid right hands. Yadong cracked with another hard right hand, finding the range and timing with that shot before another heavy leg kick buckled Figueiredo’s left leg and forced him to switch stances. Yadong stuffed another takedown and landed a head kick as Figueiredo stood back up. Figueiredo finally secured a takedown, but it was his undoing as Yadong locked up a guillotine choke and squeezed to force the tap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
