Free agent guard\u00a0Ayo Dosunmu\u00a0intends to sign a five-year, $112 million contract to return to the\u00a0Minnesota Timberwolves, with a player option in the fifth season, sources told ESPN’s Shams Charania on Monday night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Timberwolves, who shipped three-time All-Star forward\u00a0Julius Randle\u00a0to the\u00a0Brooklyn Nets\u00a0earlier in the night, made it a priority to sign Dosunmu long term after his tremendous postseason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dosunmu’s agents, Mike Lindeman and Jeff Schwartz of Excel Sports Management, worked with Timberwolves executives on Monday night to ultimately secure the long-term commitment. Dosunmu and guard\u00a0Anthony Edwards\u00a0gained chemistry after he arrived from the\u00a0Chicago Bulls\u00a0in February.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In that deal, Minnesota sent four second-round picks and former lottery pick\u00a0Rob Dillingham\u00a0to acquire Dosunmu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In his first three months with his new team, Dosunmu emerged as a crucial rotation player for a conference contender, averaging 15.6 points in 29.2 minutes during a 10-game playoff run. On the night Timberwolves starting guard\u00a0Donte DiVincenzo\u00a0suffered a torn right Achilles, Dosunmu scored 43 points off the bench in an upset win over the\u00a0Denver Nuggets\u00a0in Game 4 of their first-round series.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But persistent right calf trouble stunted his playoff emergence. Dosunmu was forced to miss Game 6 against the Nuggets and Game 1 against the\u00a0San Antonio Spurs\u00a0because of right calf tightness that was also a problem late in the regular season. He returned in the second round but was relatively ineffective (9.4 points on 36% shooting) in five games against the Spurs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
