  • F1 to have extra test day from 2027, engine tweaks approved

June 23 : Formula One teams will be allowed an extra day of pre-season testing from next year while agreed engine tweaks have now been formally approved, the sport’s governing body said on Tuesday.

The current allocation of three days of testing has been increased to four due to the complexity of the cars, the International Automobile Federation (FIA) said after its World Motor Sport Council (WMSC) met in Macau.

It added that the WMSC had ratified proposed changes “to rebalance the contribution of the Internal Combustion Engine and Energy Recovery System contribution across the 2027 and 2028 seasons.

“Updates include targeted adjustments to internal combustion engine output, fuel energy flow and energy recovery system deployment, together with increased flexibility in energy management.”

The changes aim to allow more flat-out qualifying and less energy management after widespread driver complaints earlier this season that racing had become more artificial and also more dangerous.

  • Speed skating moves to Netherlands, Lyon to host ice sports in 2030 Winter Games

June 23 : Speed skating is set for a move to the Netherlands in the 2030 Winter Olympics, after the IOC’s executive board approved a venue plan for the Games to be hosted in the French Alps, with several ice sports also moving from Nice to Lyon.

    • The Thialf ice arena in Heerenveen, the Netherlands, has been proposed as the speed skating venue at the 2030 Winter Olympics.

    • Organisers wanted a speed skating venue outside France “given the absence of an existing one in the host country,” the IOC said on Monday.

    • Curling, figure skating, ice hockey and short track are being moved from Nice to Lyon.

    • “This evolution supports a more compact overall Games footprint and enables significant cost efficiencies,” the governing body added.

    • Nice had originally been designated as the Games’ southern “ice sports hub” under the French Alps bid, grouping all indoor events in a major coastal city despite a need to build or adapt venues.

  • Injured Reddy to miss India’s T20I series against England, Ireland

June 23 – Nitish Kumar Reddy has been ruled out of India’s Twenty20 international series against Ireland and England due to injury, the country’s cricket board (BCCI) said on Tuesday.

Suryansh Shedge has been named as his replacement, with Reddy’s absence leaving India short of a frontline pace-bowling all-rounder for the series.

Reddy reported discomfort on his left quadriceps following the third one-day international against Afghanistan on Saturday and has been advised to undergo a period of rehabilitation, the BCCI added.

Shedge, 23, comes in as a batting all-rounder and got the call-up after scoring 147 runs in five matches for India A in the recently concluded tri-series in Sri Lanka.

India face Ireland in two T20Is in Belfast on June 26 and June 28 before travelling to England for a five-match series in July.

  • Chiefs might get crucial Patrick Mahomes news before training camp

The Kansas City Chiefs are looking to bounce back after missing the playoffs for the first time in the Patrick Mahomes era.

The superstar quarterback tore his ACL and LCL late in the season, an injury that put his status for the season opener in jeopardy and would more than likely cost most quarterbacks games the following season.

However, Mahomes isn’t like most quarterbacks. He went under the knife almost right after suffering the injury, and he’s reportedly ahead of schedule in his recovery.

Patrick Mahomes might be fully cleared before training camp

“Coming off a torn ACL and LCL and a December surgery, Mahomes was already working in install periods, individuals and 7-on-7 through OTAs,” Breer reported. “He’s trending toward being fully cleared relatively soon, but I’d expect Kansas City to be judicious with him early in camp—because when you tell him to go, he’ll go.”

Mahomes was looking as sharp as ever in some now-viral offseason workout clips, and he did as much as he could in the team’s OTAs and minicamp.

He won’t take no for an answer, but the Chiefs must think about the big picture and bring him back slowly to keep him healthy for when it matters the most.

The Chiefs should also address their wide receiver concerns by adding one of the remaining veterans, as they didn’t do much to help their offense beyond adding Kenneth Walker III.

Whatever the case, Mahomes is trending in the right direction, and while he may not be as mobile early on in the season, it looks like they won’t have to play a single game without their future Hall of Famer after all.

  • It’s ‘Serena being Serena’ as Williams makes audacious singles return at Wimbledon

This is the real deal now.

After initially returning in doubles, Serena Williams is ramping up her tennis return with singles, too.

    At Wimbledon, of all places.

All eyes will be on the 44-year-old Williams when she competes in the first round of the grass-court Grand Slam, which starts Monday.

While she has played two doubles warmup matches recently, Williams hasn’t contested an official singles match in nearly four years.

ESPN commentator Mary Joe Fernandez called it “a sign of confidence” that Serena is prepared to enter the sport’s most prestigious tournament without having played a singles match in so long.

“But if anybody can do it,” Fernandez said, “it’s Serena.”

Added fellow ESPN commentator Patrick McEnroe, “I would call this Serena being Serena. It’s very Serena-like to do something audacious like this and I didn’t think for one minute she was coming back to play doubles (only).”

Williams has accepted wild card invitations for both singles and doubles (with sister Venus) from the All England Club.

Williams made her return this month by playing two doubles matches with two different partners. She won with Victoria Mboko at Queen’s Club and lost with Karolina Muchova at the Berlin Open.

Williams’ powerful serve and returns were on display but it remains to be seen how well she can cover the entire court and how much stamina she has for singles.

With 23 Grand Slam singles titles — seven of them at Wimbledon — and 14 more in doubles (all with Venus as her partner), nobody is questioning her qualifications, experience or aura.

“Hopefully she’ll be able to be competitive right off the bat,” McEnroe added.

Serena also swept the singles and doubles (with Venus) titles at the 2012 London Olympics, when the tennis competition was held on the hallowed grass of the All England Club. And she was the runner-up four times in singles at Wimbledon.

Serena will learn who her first-round opponent is on Friday when the singles draws for Wimbledon are held. Then her opening match will be either next Monday or Tuesday.

“No one’s going to want to face her,” said Fernandez, who coached Williams as Fed Cup captain and on the U.S. Olympic team.

The Williams sisters’ opening doubles match will come later in the opening week.

    Sabalenka and Swiatek

Despite her resume, Serena is by no means the favorite for the trophy.

Among the top contenders are top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka, 2022 champion Elena Rybakina and freshly crowned French Open champion Mirra Andreeva, who at 19 is 25 years younger than Serena.

Sabalenka is looking to bounce back from a crushing defeat at Roland Garros, where she let a big lead slip away and didn’t win a game in the third set of a loss to Diana Shnaider in the quarterfinals.

Rybakina is known as one of the game’s best servers and her game adapts well to grass.

Andreeva reached the quarterfinals in London last year and will have more confidence after her performance in Paris.

Iga Swiatek is the defending champion and moves well on grass.

Since Serena has no ranking and won’t be seeded, she could potentially face any of the top players in the opening round.

    Sinner and Djokovic

With Carlos Alcaraz still sidelined with a right wrist injury that also kept him out of the French Open, Jannik Sinner is favored to defend his title — even after the top-ranked Sinner’s stunning second-round meltdown in a Paris heat wave.

“It’s Sinner and then it’s everyone else,” McEnroe said. “That’s the bottom line on the men’s side.”

French Open champion Alexander Zverev has never been past the fourth round at the All England Club and lost his opening match a year ago.

Sinner’s biggest challenger could be 39-year-old Novak Djokovic, who like Serena is a seven-time Wimbledon champion. A 24-time Grand Slam champion overall, Djokovic has reached the semifinals or better in his last seven appearances at the All England Club.

“He’s so comfortable on the grass,” Fernandez said. “This is for me is where he has his best chance to win another major.”

So with a combined age of 83, Serena and Djokovic could be ready for a repeat of 2015, when they won Wimbledon in the same year.
