The Melbourne Stars and Renegades are set to merge into a single franchise in the Big Bash League. The merger is administrative in nature and will involve rebadging, but the player lists will stay the same for the time being.

As pointed out in our explainer before, Cricket Victoria are one of the three state associations who are in favour of privatisation of the Big Bash League. Once that goes through, the state board intend to sell its second Big Bash franchise license in full.

Renegades’ General Manager James Rosengarten is expected to be the GM of the newly formed team. A lot of other details like the make up of the playing squad, the venue of choice as well as the name of the team and more, remain a work-in-progress.

It’s still early days for this new development. The next update could be determined by the outcome of Cricket Australia’s key meeting on June 15 where plans regarding the privatisation of the league will be further discussed.

England have reduced their 15-man selection by three players, for the first home Test against New Zealand at Lord’s, starting on Thursday (June 4). England had previously named a 15-member squad which included the now-omitted trio of Somerset batter James Rew, leg spinner Rehan Ahmed and Surrey seamer Matthew Fisher.

England squad:Ben Stokes (C), Gus Atkinson, Sonny Baker, Shoaib Bashir, Jacob Bethell, Harry Brook, Ben Duckett, Emilio Gay, Ollie Robinson, Joe Root, Jamie Smith (wk), Josh Tongue

Two uncapped players – Durham’s top-order batter Emilio Gay and Hampshire pacer Sonny Baker, have made it to the final 12, and could be in line to debut at the iconic venue. Gay comes into the picture after England chose to drop opener Zak Crawley following a poor Ashes series. Speaking of the excitement around the other potential debutant, Sonny Baker, McCullum was effusive in his praise. “Sonny Baker is quick. I think he’s going be a cricketer the country really gets behind when he does play. He charges in and he leaves everything out there.

“He’s full noise. He’s exciting. He swings the ball both ways and he’s obviously got the ability to touch 90mph. He’s an exciting proposition, and his time, if it’s not in this Test, his time will come. If it is in this Test, I’d expect him to do a good job,” McCullum added.

England also look set to welcome Shoaib Bashir back into their XI. The spinner hasn’t played a Test since the third fixture against India last July, also at Lord’s, where he suffered a broken finger. He then warmed the benches during the Ashes 2025-26. England head coach Brendon McCullum expects a dual role for his lead spinner in the first fixture.

“Bash, he has the ability to probably play more of a holding role in the first couple days here at Lord’s,” McCullum said. “Then as the game deepens, and if spin becomes more prevalent, then he can go more into an attacking role.”

With Jofra Archer not available for this fixture due to his IPL commitments and Brydon Carse still recovering from a wrist injury, England have retained Ollie Robinson in the 12. The fast bowler last played a Test for England in February 2024.

McCullum kept his final XI plans close to his chest, leaving his final calls till the very end based on the weather conditions. There are showers expected all through the first Test.

“There is a little bit of jeopardy around the conditions and the forecast over the next 48 hours,” McCullum said. “We have a strong understanding of what we think will be our XI, but we do want to have the ability to pivot if required, if the conditions turn out to be slightly different to what we anticipate.”

Within the XI, England have decided to swap batting positions of wicketkeeper Jamie Smith and Ben Stokes, pushing the former up to No.6 while the England skipper will drop down to No. 7. The 25-year-old Smith has a Test average of 44 from No.6 and 38 from a spot below, while Stokes has recently endured tough batting spells, averaging just 18 in the last Ashes.

“We think it’s quite a nice balance of trying to get Jamie Smith more time with the out and out batters, then if Stokesy finds himself operating with the tail he’s got so much experience and he’s batted in those positions frequently,” McCullum said. “It’s a small tactical shift. It’s something we’ll have a go at and we’ll see where it lands, but everyone is on board with it.”

    Season at a glance

Winning is a habit, but so is losing. For long, the world of sports has adopted the adage for lazy deconstructions. Punjab Kings, in IPL 2026, demonstrated that there are reasons to stick with it. Unbeaten in the first half of the season, the Shreyas Iyer led side had promised to put up one of the most dominant displays ever witnessed in a season to make up for what was agonisingly missed last year – the team’s maiden IPL trophy. And out of nowhere, dramatically, as the lead bowler started striking and Lockie Ferguson returned to the squad, the team almost forgot the process of winning.

Batters would mount runs, but bowlers found no way to stop the leaks. More than once, simple catches were dropped. They were not being outplayed, but over and over again, they turned up second best.

From a loss against Rajasthan Royals which ‘teaches you a lot’ to reaching a point where even a victory in the final game couldn’t guarantee them a spot in the playoffs, the season’s slide often lacked an explanation. The same core with greater experience, and the same formula that the team had stuck to for two successive seasons with plenty of success, had suddenly started to prove ineffective. As a result, the campaign fizzled out.

    Player of the season:Shreyas Iyer

498 runs at 168.81 – the PBKS captain carried on from the good work done by PBKS’s top-order, or ensured the innings didn’t fall apart in the absence of a strong start. In almost every second outing, he went past the 50-run mark, and delivered with a century in the must-win game against LSG. Ever reliable on the field, he was the chief architect of one of the best catches of the tournament. While his bowling unit lacked the bite, some of his bowling changes were inspired, none more than the clever utilisation of Shashank Singh at different times during the season.

    A stat that adds up:

PBKS had the worst performing bowling unit this season – with the worst average (42.54), strike rate (24.5) and economy rate (10.40). Barring Azmatullah Omarzai and Shashank Singh, none of their seam bowling options conceded at less than 10 an over.

    A mini auction pick that…

Looked a million bucks: Picked at a price of INR 3 Crore, Cooper Connolly offered his money’s worth. The Australian southpaw adapted seamlessly to the conditions and the pitches in the tournament, kickstarting his campaign with a match-winning 44-ball 72*. He remained consistent, and mostly well-paced throughout the season, getting out early only once. In only his maiden season, he finished the campaign with 491 runs at a strike rate of 163.12.

Didn’t work out: None really. The only other player who got a chance to play was Ben Dwarshuis. The pacer didn’t have an impressive outing against DC (the only game he played), but any judgement over a one-off performance would be unfair.

    Best match of the season

Six days after hammering Lucknow Super Giants for 254 for 7, PBKS made a mockery of Delhi Capitals’ score of 264 for 2. Their bowlers did have a tough day, but Prabhsimran Singh and Priyansh Arya’s opening stand of 126 in only 41 balls ensured they weren’t feeling too bad for too long. Kings eventually blazed their way to the target with seven balls to spare, and broke their own record for the highest total chased down in IPL.

On a scale of 1-10, 1 being urgent need for introspection and 10, a celebration into the night – IPL 2026 for Punjab Kings has been: 6

Punjab Kings may have lost six out of 14 games, but they were never really outplayed. At worst, they lost two games – against SRH and RCB respectively – by reasonable margins. If not for the point lost to rain against KKR when they were on a victory run (and KKR couldn’t find a win), Punjab Kings would have qualified to the playoffs, and opened themselves to more optimistic possibilities.

Bangladesh pace bowler Hasan Mahmud is all set to join Kent County Cricket Club this season, officials confirmed on Tuesday. Hasan’s agent, Ihsaan Syed-Hussain, confirmed the development to Cricbuzz and added that the right-arm pacer is expected to be available for Kent’s County Championship fixture against Lancashire on June 12.

Previously, Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan represented Worcestershire and Surrey in county cricket.

Hasan, who suffered a tennis elbow injury during the Bangladesh Premier League and consequently missed Bangladesh’s home series against Pakistan, recently travelled to England and trained with Kent under the supervision of head coach Adam Hollioake.

Ihsaan, a British-born with Bangladeshi background, played a key role in facilitating the deal between Hasan and Kent.

“The plan is for him to be available for the match on June 12th (against Lancashire), which is the first game against Lancashire. That is the target they are working towards. We are hopeful the visa will be sorted by then. If not, then he will obviously have to debut in the following game on June 18th (against Middlesex), but the official plan is June 12th,” Ihsaan said .

“To be precise, this wasn’t a sudden deal. I have been planting the seeds for this move ever since Hasan took that five-wicket haul against India. From that point on, since I have a very good connection with the Kent County Cricket Club management and know their captain well, I approached them. I told the captain, “Listen, there’s this guy named Hasan Mahmud playing for Bangladesh. He’s doing great, and if he plays in County cricket, he will absolutely dismantle sides.”

“They started monitoring him from there. They were actually very interested in him last year, during the 2025 season. However, Hasan had international commitments with series against Sri Lanka and Ireland at the time, so availability was an issue, and they couldn’t sign him. But we kept a very close connection with Kent throughout, keeping the momentum going and ensuring they knew the interest was mutual,” he said.

“At the start of this season, they showed strong interest again. Verbally, the head coach and management told us, “Look, we really want him this year.” Everyone, including the captain, was incredibly keen on bringing Hasan in. But there were two main hurdles we had to navigate. The first was his exact window of availability. As we know with Bangladesh cricket, schedules can shift at the very last minute. It’s not like other countries where the schedule is set in stone a year in advance. The second issue was that Kent already had their overseas slots filled at the time,” he said.

“Then, everything changed. Hasan unfortunately suffered a tennis elbow injury and came over to England for rehab for a period of time. During that period, I contacted Kent again. Before this, they had verbally agreed to take him, but there was no official contract signed. Once Hasan arrived in the UK, I told Kent, “Hasan is here in the UK recovering from his injury. He has some bowling workloads to do as part of his rehab plan. Can he come over and bowl at your facilities?” he said.

“They immediately said, “Yeah, of course! We want to sign him anyway, so we are more than happy for him to use our facilities and practice here.”

“That is why Hasan was bowling there. It wasn’t an official trial; he was just doing his injury rehab. But while he was bowling there, the management got to see him face-to-face. Coincidentally, during this exact period, one of Kent’s overseas slots opened up.

“I’m not entirely sure which specific player left, because they had three or four overseas players on rotation, including players from South Africa. But one slot became vacant. Once that happened, Kent came to us and said, “Listen, we can potentially make this work now. What is his exact availability looking like?” he said.

“We looked at the calendar and realized there was a perfect window. He could play two games in June and then return for four games in September. Kent agreed instantly. Everything aligned perfectly. Now, the contract is officially signed, everything is finalized, and we are just waiting on the visa. Once that arrives, he will fly over, play the June games, and fulfil his contract. In the meantime, he also secured a Lanka Premier League (LPL) deal. So his upcoming schedule is: play for Kent in June, play the bilateral series against Zimbabwe if selected, head to Sri Lanka for the LPL, followed by the series against Australia,” he said.

“He will travel to Australia for the Test series, and then in September, he will fly back to England to play the remaining County games for Kent. The only County matches he will miss are the ones in August, but Kent is completely fine with that because they knew about the Australia series from the start. They said, “If he has to represent Bangladesh in Australia, no problem. He can play there and then come back to finish the season with us.” So that’s the full story behind the deal. It’s been in the works in the background for a very long time, even though from the outside it might look like it happened overnight,” he added.

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) officials said they would be happy to see Hasan feature in county cricket, provided it does not clash with national commitments.

“We are open for him, and for that matter any cricketer, if that is not having an impact on his national commitment,” Shahriar Nafees, BCB’s cricket operations in-charge, told Cricbuzz when asked about Hasan’s no-objection certificate for Kent.

Hasan recently received another boost after being picked by Colombo Kaps for the upcoming Lanka Premier League.

The fast bowler has played 13 Tests and claimed 36 wickets, including two five-wicket hauls and one four-wicket haul.

He also has an impressive white-ball record, having taken 33 wickets in 26 One-Day Internationals and 28 wickets in 26 T20 Internationals.
